Teamwork 101 - Period 1 [Class #13] [Monday]
Reno was looking a bit on the subdued side today as the students filed into the classroom. Sure, he was propped back against his desk as usual, with his arms crossed over his chest and that little grin of his fixed to his face like he wasn't capable of any other expression. But his greeting today left a little something to be desired.
"Yo, rookies."
Oh, the enthusiasm.
"So, I don't know how much you guys remember from the weekend. If it's all perfect-clear or kinda fuzzy or you got nothin' at all. But we got to thinkin', hey, maybe it gave you guys a bit of insight about relationships you made while you were here, and the kinda good it did you all somewhere down the road, yo."
Rikku had the red, scratchy eyes of someone who had been crying. Or who had allergies. But she was an old pro at covering, even if she was out of practice.
"Some of you graduate at the end of the month," she said. Less chirpy than her usual, but with a determined sort of cheer. "You'll stay in touch with some people, and some of you, more than others. Having allies in far-off places is never a bad thing, but it requires a different kind of asset management than we've talked about before."
"Keeping in touch is your first step," Reno said, bravely soldiering onward. "Fandom gives you options, generally, but your best bet for handlin' time and space is always gonna be the simple act of writin' letters. Anything that involves electricity is gonna be touchy." Which was him getting a bit derailed, yes. But that was the way that Reno worked. "Once you make certain that the friends you got now are still gonna be your friends in twenty years, then you're golden. And, I know, most of you ain't gonna be keepin' in touch just so you know you got someone who can cover your ass when shit gets rough, yo. But... Hey, the option'll be there. Kickass, right?"
"The drawback is a delayed response," Rikku said helpfully. "Whether it's monster fighting or moving a couch, friends that are geographically and dimensionally closer can get there more quickly. I mean, you wouldn't ask someone to catch a portal to help you put out a fire."
She flipped a hand. "On the other hand, anything you can schedule ahead of time is fair game. Make it into an event. Have your friends help with a big project, and use it as a chance to have a much-needed get together."
"Today, we're gonna get you guys to think about whatever lasting relationships you might be able to remember, from the weekend," Reno continued, casting a sideways glance to Rikku before shrugging and looking back at the class. "If you don't remember nothin', that's fine. Now's a good time to think about the friends you got, and how you think you'll keep up with 'em after you graduate. If you do remember somethin', then here's where you think about what you got outta them relationships over the years. At the risk of soundin' like a big friggin' sap, friendship is about teamwork too, yo."
Rikku was nodding, through that last bit of Reno's. "And ... friendship is important," she said, feeling pretty sappy herself. "It's too easy to lose track of people who matter. Don't let them slip away."
