Teamwork 101 -- Period 1 [Monday]

By the time the students made their way into the classroom, Reno was already good and comfortable, leaning back against the teachers’ desk, arms crossed in front of himself. And yes, he was feeling much better this week than he had been when he’d missed the last class. No inclination to puke on anything. Kickass.

“Yo, Rookies!” He shot the group a grin. “Them fundraisin’ projects we been workin’ on ain’t due just yet. You got two more weeks to get your shit together and make ‘em run. And then, on the 11th of April, you’re all gonna come in here and give us receipts from whatever charity you chose to donate to, so that Rikku an’ I can meet your donations outta our own pockets, yo.”

All the more reason to do well, right guys? Making the teachers spend actual money was always fun!

“We can’t wait to see what you guys come up with!” Rikku bounced. “But you’re gonna have to finish them in your own time, because this week’s class isn’t about your projects. I mean, we gave you time for those before, you know? This week, instead, we’re gonna be talking about communication.”

Rikku was not good at segues.

“We’re all gonna sit down an’ have some heart-to-hearts with one another today,” Reno said, scooting back so that he was actually sitting on top of the desk, now. “Pick a partner, and talk with them about somethin’, about anything you got goin’ on now that’s eatin’ at you. You don’t gotta share your deep dark secrets or nothin’ like that. Talk about how your laundry ain’t been done in weeks, or about how you’re thinkin’ of gettin’ a job but don’t know where to start. Whatever you’re comfortable with dumpin’ onto a partner, yo.”

“And then, it’s your partner’s turn,” Rikku chirped. “And as the partner, it’s your job to figure out something that you have, or can do, or know, that would help with the first person’s problem. Maybe you know a place that gives out quarters for machines. Maybe you’ve seen a ‘NOW HIRING’ sign in a window downtown. Maybe you have a superpower that instantly washes and dries clothes! The thing is, you don’t have to go out and solve their problem. You don’t have to go wash their clothes, or send in resumes until your partner gets hired. You just have to share some information that could help with that problem. Does that make sense?”

“So, get to it, Rookies.” Reno grinned that sharp, kind of crooked grin of his before adding, “Homework for next week, on top of pullin’ together what you need for your fundraisers, is to get your hands on some kinda vegetable, and bring it in for class next week.”

No, he wasn’t going to explain why. Just bring some friggin’ veggies, Rookies.

Oh. Oh, gosh. Sharing... wasn't really Wes's thing. Maybe he could get away with just listening to someone and taking a really long time with it.

"Hi!" It's okay, Wesley! Momoko was totally awesome at sharing! Especially when it didn't have to be important!

She took a seat next to him. "I want to learn how to cook but I think the stove hates me. I mean, I try and everything comes out wrong! And it totally doesn't matter what I cook. I mean I took all day to make just one dish and that was with a recipe!"

See? Sharing!

Oh! That was sharing. Check that out. Good for you, Momoko!

"Oh," he said, processing the... extreme bubbliness. "That's unfortunate. Have you tried making something more simple, maybe? An omelet? Tea?"

"Omelets aren't easy. Well, they totally are if you count how easy they are to burn." She sighed.

"I can make tea, though! And a vegetarian chili, and Valentine's Chocolate, and Tako-san wieners." Momoko counted off on her fingers, then let her hand flail. "But everything else turns out burnt or undercooked or missing ingredients!"

"Well, the missing ingredients part seems easy to remedy," Wesley offered helpfully. "Just write out the recipe step-by-step, and make sure not to proceed until all the required ingredients have been used. Er, correctly."

That was important.

Momoko frowned. "I have to rewrite the recipe?"

It was already hard enough to not be bored while cooking, but to have to rewrite the whole recipe first?

"Well, maybe not," Wes conceded. "But if you have trouble remembering all the ingredients, it might be best to take the necessary precautions to ensure that you... ah... remember them."

"Ah! That's a good idea!" she pounded her fist into her palm excitedly. "So I would write it out and that would help me make sure I have everything and when I am making it, I would know the recipe better!"

It probably wouldn't help with the over- or under-cooking, but it was a start.

"I'll try it! Now, you? What can I help you with?"
