Angela sits, hand folded demurely in her lap. "Right. Because my partner really isn't comfortable with being a slavem, and I don't wanna be a master, so ... that's kind of it."

Nodding, Tara says, "that's okay. Thank you for letting me know. Now, we have two options. One is for you to explore slavery as a research topic, and hand me in an essay. The other is to accept that the whole issue is too uncomfortable for you, and I'll give you another assignment from one of the topics later in the term. Which would you prefer?"

"I'm willing to write the essay on slavery," Angela volunteers. "If nothing else, I'd kind of like to know why you gave the assignment."

"Okay," Tara nods. "Then I'd like you to do a research essay into slavery." She grabs a piece of paper, and starts outlining her expectations for the assignment. "Pick a culture in which slavery exists, or existed, identify what the responsibilities are of both Master and slave, and what penalties the culture implements if either party does not meet them. I also would like you to discuss what power the slave is left with, particularly in the sense of free will and agency. Identify what ethical issues accompany slavery as performed in that society, and state your personal position on them. Abuse may be one of the issues you discuss, but try to remember it's an essay about slavery, not abuse. There have to be issues other than that."

(ooc: Just to be clear, I don't actually expect you to write up essay. *grin*)

The essay sounds tough, but not impossible. Angela accepts the assignment. "Is it okay if I write about the U.S. before the Civil War, or is that too obvious?"

"That's fine," Tara smiles. "Does three weeks sound fair as a due date? Of course, you can come and talk to me if you have any problems with it."
