Classrooms Around Campus, All Day Saturday

It was Saturday, and that meant Career Day! Unbeknownst to all the students who had taken the career placement test, Fandom had apparently conspired to place them all in workshops that didn't quite fit the answers they gave for their tests. The island was tricky that way. Not to mention that the workshops that the island had planned were somewhat different from the workshops an ordinary school might offer on Career Day. As in quite a lot different.

So the classrooms all around the school were filled with visitors from off-island and island alike, all of whom had been led to believe that they would be teaching eager-minded groups of students, excited to learn about their prospective careers. This assumption was not necessarily accurate.

Reno just snorted and gave his head a shake.

"Didn't even get rugrats clingin' to my leg last time kids invaded the island," Reno shared. "The hairdo is courtesy of Deadpool's kid, yo. Jan's got a thing for braidin' long hair."

He so didn't mind. He was kinda fond of the little girl. Reminded him a little of Ruba, if he didn't squint too hard.

"What, you think Rikku and I are in some kinda rush?"

Rude crossed his arms and huffed slightly. He just thought little Turk-Bhed-lings would be adorable, okay? Was that so wrong?

"You're always rushing into... everything else."

"You're just sore because you're so damn slow," Reno decided. That was clearly the only explanation, right. "And besides, I wanna know I ain't completely screwed over, one way or another, before we even think about shit like that. And can you see me, changin' shitty diapers at three in the morning, when I could be takin' odd jobs offin' monsters, instead?"

He was still so young!

"Of course not," Rude conceded. "You'd win a bet and make me do it."

"An' that's because you're my best buddy," Reno replied, laughing and reaching to clap Rude on the back. "I make you handle baby crap because I care, yo."

And also because... Reno. Small children.

That was a potentially tragic combination.

"You make me handle all kinds of crap," Rude agreed, reaching up to pat Reno's back, too. "Maybe I should stop caring." No, he wasn't going to.

Reno plus small children wasn't tragic, it was chaotic. Something would inevitably get broken, and it would probably be one of Rude's limbs.

"Can't do that, man. You love me, yo."

In that purely platonic way of theirs, of course.

"You been keepin' busy, lately? Life in Junon ain't been too shitty without me, has it?"

They'd shut down that bar in Junon that Rude used to like, after the WEAPON attack. Therefore, the place had to be awful, by Reno logic.

Of course.

"The seafood is good," Rude replied. That one bar was shut down, sure, but there were others. And the whole place was more open, without the Sister Ray taking up the middle of the city.

"...You thinking of coming back?" he asked. Yes, life was shitty without Reno.

Aww, Rude. Reno could read between those lines like a pro, and his first response was a smile that only Rude would know to see as an apologetic frown.

They spoke a complex language, Reno and Rude.

"I'd be lyin' if I said I didn't miss it," he replied, honestly enough. "But I got Rikku here, yo. And anyhow, I'm pretty sure Tseng's still sore at me, yo."

In all fairness, Reno had at least had a bit of that coming to him.

"Tseng's... always sore at you," Rude replied with a shrug. "He's Tseng."

Normally, he was able to keep the peace between the two of them. It was frustrating that this time he hadn't managed to.

Well, normally, Reno and Rude were connected at the hip, and so Reno always had that buffer, there to give him a look if he was about to overstep. Since Rude hadn't had the kinky night with Tseng, it had been Elena to play buffer, instead.

Reno did not yet speak fluent Rookie.

"True," Reno allowed, grinning a little. "Don't think I ever heard him tell me to get out before."

Well, he had. Plenty of times. But never like that.

Rude grunted an affirmative.

"This time is different," he agreed. And it sucked.

"I tell ya, man, at least I had here to fall back on."

Translation? 'I came here because Fandom was like the only place I have left.'

"I guess I could'a called up Romeo an' Doji, too. Or headed off to Spira. But..."

Translation: 'I don't like sushi, and the Al Bhed will only let me bust all the teeth out of Gippal's head so many times.'

"But they're not 'home'," Rude added. And Fandom was, for Reno. And Midgar was, but it wasn't there anymore. Junon was nice, but it wasn't home.

"Yeah," Reno agreed, smiling a little. See? Rude totally got it. Damn, Reno missed having him around all the time. "Somethin' like that, zoto."

"Yeah." And Rude missed having Reno around. Junon would feel more like home with Reno there. Any place would.

"It's not the same." Junon. Midgar. The Turks. Life. None of it was.

"End of the world a few times'll do that," Reno sighed. "Man, we blew it good over the years, didn't we?"

Them, the Turks, ShinRa, take your pick, Rude.

"It's a living," Rude told him.

They were Turks. They did what they were asked to do, because no one else would. Even if they knew the orders were a bad idea. Even if the person giving the orders was crazy. That's what Turks did.

They did the job.

"It ain't, no more."

They did the job, even if it meant that there wouldn't be a job left to do, somewhere down the road.

That was what Turks did, too.

"No, it's not."

And the Turks barely existed anymore. And Rude didn't know what he wanted to do with his life. Helping Tseng run errands for the WRO was nice, but it wasn't the same.

Damn, he needed a drink.

Wasn't it awesome, how Reno could damn near read Rude's mind?

"New bar opened in town last night," he noted, pursing his lips thoughtfully. "Less likely to have kids crawlin' all through it, yo. They card."

Which was wild and crazy, after so many years with only Caritas. But it meant that if they headed that way, they wouldn't have to worry so much about the words coming out of their mouth.

"Sounds good. I've got a presentation to make soon, anyway."

"Right," Reno replied, right back to laughing again. "Strife delivery, yo. knock 'em dead, Rude. Do it good enough, Cloud might quit that, too."
