Classrooms Around Campus, All Day Saturday

It was Saturday, and that meant Career Day! Unbeknownst to all the students who had taken the career placement test, Fandom had apparently conspired to place them all in workshops that didn't quite fit the answers they gave for their tests. The island was tricky that way. Not to mention that the workshops that the island had planned were somewhat different from the workshops an ordinary school might offer on Career Day. As in quite a lot different.

So the classrooms all around the school were filled with visitors from off-island and island alike, all of whom had been led to believe that they would be teaching eager-minded groups of students, excited to learn about their prospective care
ers. This assumption was not necessarily accurate.

"No, I haven't," Sheila said, with the kind of sigh that said it was very painful for her, to have not seen the new Tag Heuer line. "What if she catches you with it? I only steal from people if I'm probably going to never see them again."

Or ex-boyfriends. Same thing.

Jack waved a hand. "Karen lets me steal things," he said proudly. "But when Rosario tries to steal things, Karen says she'll take her to the forest and hunt her like a fox." A beat. "She's probably kidding about that, though."

"Is she the help?" Sheila asked. "Because you can't let the help get ideas. You'll never be respected again."

"Yup," said Jack chipperly. "She's the help, all right." And also possibly Karen's sole connection to the human world, but he'd leave that part out.

Anyway, enough about Karen. Time for a new topic.

"You know," he said, looking Shiela up and down, "You really are very well put-together. Love the voice."

Yes. He thought Shiela was a drag queen.

"Oh, thank you," Sheila said, smoothing the dress and preening a bit. "I get so much hell for the voice, you don't even know. Like I should stop smoking just because it's not feminine. Please."

She should have realized. He wasn't the first who'd assumed that. Not by a long shot.

Jack was totally lost in his own little world of drag queen-approving, so he didn't quite process that last part. Instead, he squinted at her and nodded some more. "And great job covering up the Adam's apple," he said, impressed. "Concealer?"

"Oh, for the love of --" Dr. Girlfriend facepalmed. "I don't have an Adam's apple. I happen to be a woman, thank you very much."

Jack tilted his head.

"Really?"

He lowered his voice. "You can tell me, you know," he said. "I happen to be an expert at these things."
