Library [02/27]

Well, spring break had ended, and it was time to get back into the swing of things after a week spent in Hawaii. Somewhere between Kohala and Fandom, Jonothon's clothing had returned to him, which he was going to take as a sign of some sort. A sign, mostly, that he was never going to leave his things out of his sight again, and if anybody ever so much as looked at him with a Hawaiian shirt, he was lighting them on fire.

Honest.

The library, as if sensing this, seemed to be extra disorganized in every single section that involved happy, sunshiny things, thus demanding all of Jono's attention in places like the travel section, and the crafts shelves, and there was an entire stack of children's activity books, mostly involving little girls' paper cutouts...

If the books had any say in the matter, Jonothon was going to drown in fuzzy ducklings and pretty flowers and pink things before his shift was through.

Because the more happy things Jono has to look at, the more cranky he seems to become.

Who is only looking a little grumpy about having to re-shelve so many books about everything that prances through the forests and sparkles, from bunnies to fairies to vampires.

Bloody hell.

When he tags in!

I have Smash Mouth's version of I'm a Believer stuck in my head, thanks to the vocal stylings of half of my classmates in a classical animation lab on Friday, which turned out to mostly be three hours of spontaneous sing-along songs.

Raven's own clothing had been ~*~mysteriously~*~ returned on the trip back as well, much to her delight. She was so happy at this discovery that she had dressed head to toe in her gothiest black today, putting on her favorite black velvet skirt and top. She felt compelled to twirl as she walked into the library.

"Look, Jono," she said happily. "My clothing is back to normal!"

She looked so happy, twirling about like that, that Jono really didn't have the heart to point out that he was almost positive that there had been foul play involved, somewhere in there.

Emma was right. He was an absolute pushover.

//Mine too,// he shared, instead. //Not that I'm wearing any of my t-shirts today, granted.//

Why wear a t-shirt when you could look like a biker mummy, instead?

//Either way, I'm glad that we got our clothing back, safe and sound. Some of those t-shirts were gifts, and such.//

Raven would never assume someone, especially a dear friend, could have been so cruel as to steal their clothing and replace it with garish colors. It was unthinkable!

Raven was terribly naive sometimes, yes.

"I can see that," she said, smiling at him. "I am glad. You look like yourself again."

Well, for what it was worth, Jonothon thought that the naivety was rather adorable. It was sheer force of will that kept him from pinching her cheeks, at moments like these.

//I feel like myself again, too,// he replied. //Hawaii was nice, I'll give it that, but if I had to spend another day playing mute burn victim in those clothes, I would've probably given in to the urge to scream.//

And Jonothon's screams were... not the sort that people liked hearing, generally.

"It is difficult when you cannot be yourself," Raven agreed. "But -- clothing aside, of course -- the trip was not nearly as bad as you thought it was going to be, was it?"

Jono waffled on that, not because he hadn't enjoyed himself, but because he couldn't help but spot a Little Pony activity book out of the corner of one eye, with a bright pink pony on the cover, on the rump of which was proudly displayed a happy flamingo.

Thank you, Library.

//Overall, no. It was far better than all of that,// he admitted, reaching out and turning the stupid book upside-down. //I was in good company throughout, and th'scenery was gorgeous. And the locals and tourists all seem to have decent musical tastes.//

He'd made good money, just picking at his guitar on the beach.

Raven followed his movements as he turned the book over, giving it a confused look. "Are those left over from when the children were here?" she asked.

Now there was a somewhat terrifying thought. What if Elizabeth liked pink glittery happy things and rejected little black dresses? Clearly they'd have to appeal to Auntie Sookie for help in that matter.

"I am glad you enjoyed yourself," she said. "And that I did not have to forcibly drag you out to have fun, nor handcuff you to a tree."

OK, maybe she was beginning to enjoy saying "handcuff" to Jono just because of the interesting feelings she picked up from him whenever she did.

And in public, no less! God, Raven!

//Might be,// Jono replied, a touch distracted as the 'handcuffed to a tree' conversation drifted back to him again. //Never let it be said that I don't enjoy having fun, luv.//

The handcuffs would have been fun, too.

"Then I shall have to come up with more ways for you to have fun," Raven teased. "And now that the weather is starting to become warmer, it will be easier to engage in activities outdoors."

At least until the heat and humidity took hold of the island. And then it would be back to staying in air-conditioned comfort.

//While cuffed to trees,// Jonothon noted, lightly.

Look, he wasn't going to let that one go until Raven actually figured out where his brain was going whenever she mentioned it. Honestly, now.

//It sounds as though this spring is going to be a bit of an adventure, then.//

Raven might need to consult with her girlfriends to figure things out. The next girls night in or out could be very interesting.

"I will keep you as busy as you will let me," she said. "Now that I no longer have to worry about facing my father, I have time to learn about Earth and all its culture. There are so many things that I did not experience growing up in Azarath."

Such as handcuffs!

//Well, there's plenty of time,// Jono replied. //Though we might have to get ambitious, if you want me to show you these things before I graduate.//

This year. He graduated this year. It wasn't fair.

That had been a subject Raven had been trying not to think too much about. She had another full year left in Fandom, so she didn't have to dwell too much on her own plans, but the prospect of Jono leaving was depressing.

"Will you stay for the summer?" she asked hesitantly. "Or will you leave once school is done?"

//I... don't know,// Jono admitted. //I haven't really put much thought into where I'll go when I leave, at any rate.//

That was a lie. It was hard not to think about. Where could he go? Crawling back to Generation X after ditching them for a couple of years felt... stupid.

//I don't much want to go, honestly.//

"I know you have friends in your own world," Raven said. She hadn't met any of them, but she'd heard about them visiting the island from the radio broadcasts during past Parents Weekends. "They would be happy to have you back with them, would they not?"

She didn't much want Jono to go, either.

//Angelo and Lee might be,// Jono allowed. //M and Ev... probably wouldn't care much either way. Penance... It's always difficult to tell, with Penance.//

And Paige? He wasn't even going to think about Paige. That way led only to madness.

"My home is gone now," Raven said softly. "And the Earth that was my mother's home is as alien to me as any world. I had always thought I would go to a friend's world, like Karla's, when I was required to leave Fandom, for I did not wish to be alone." That thought was terrifying.

"You could do the same," she said. "Stay with the friends who care about you." She didn't want Jono to be alone as much as she didn't want herself to be by herself.

Jono nodded a little. He certainly wasn't ruling that one out as an option, either. Only...

//I think I'm older than... most of my friends, actually,// he noted, quietly. //I don't know if anybody that I could go back with is graduating this summer or not. And even if they were, finding a place where I wouldn't spend all of my time hiding...//

That would be a bit of a challenge, unto itself.

//There's still time, though. No rush, really, to figure things out.//

"You should not have to hide," Raven said, her tone growing more fierce. She hated Jono's world for making him do that.

"You would not have to in my world...or Glacia," she said. "And I am certain there are others as well. But you are correct, there is no rush to decide now, particularly if you remain here for the summer. I know many people would be glad to see you do that."

She drew closer to Jono, reaching for his hand. "But until then there are horror movies and music and many other things for us to do," she said with a tiny smile.

Jono nodded a little, closing the distance between their hands, curling his fingers around hers.

//No shortage of things, no,// he agreed. //Who knows? Maybe I'll be inspired, between now and then.//

It was so, so tempting to just stay and continue running the Groovy Tunes. But then, he had a responsibility back home, didn't he?

"And you may always talk things over with me, if you wish," Raven offered. "Though I cannot promise to be completely unbiased."

She gave his hand a gentle squeeze. "But for now, there are far more important matters," she said lightly. "Such as, have you chosen a horror movie to show me?"

Jono actually managed a laugh at that, more or less.

//You know, I'm working on narrowing it down? There are so many to choose from...//

And they were all awful!

"Are there more horror movies than there are romantic ones?" Raven had to ask.

That just seemed a travesty!

//I imagine it's about balanced,// Jono offered, shrugging his shoulders a little. //I wouldn't know, luv. I don't actually watch many romances.//

Well, he was admittedly fond of Casablanca, but he was far more willing to file that one under 'classic' than 'romance.'

Be careful, Jono, or Raven might get it into her head to make you watch a romance movie with her.

"Then people must truly enjoy being frightened, if they make so many of these movies," Raven decided. "I am looking forward to the experience."

She said that now.

//I think what they really appreciate is the opportunity to experience fear in a perfectly safe atmosphere,// Jono mused. //Th'murderer on th'screen is never going to step out and start to chase you, after all. It's a head-rush, without th'danger.//

"That does make sense," Raven said. A little bit, at least. She'd still have to judge for herself Wednesday night. "It is better to be momentarily frightened by something that will not harm you than it is to be scared of something that will."

That likely wasn't going to stop her from clinging to Jono's hand and burying her face in his shoulder during the really scary parts.

Honestly, did she think Jonothon would mind? That was half the reason that he'd insisted on watching so many horror films with Didi, when she was still around, too.

//Precisely. And really, most of what goes on in these films is so ludicrous, it's a wonder that anybody is frightened of what's in them at all. Really, it's all cinematography. Camera angles and lighting and stupid costumes and food colouring.//

"That does not sound so bad," Raven said. Really, how could she be afraid of simple food coloring?

She was so woefully naïve.
