People grow apart sometimes when the things they had in common that started the friendship in the first place are no longer there. Distance causes breakdowns too. It's just harder to stay friends that way.
I think, sometimes, it's easier to talk to strangers than former friends. There's too much baggage with the latter, too many issues. It makes it harder to deal with them, especially if the friendship ended on bad terms.
