Library [2/17]

All was calm in the library today.

Cassidy had made sure that the books were properly shelved -- and even corrected some of the books who had tried to shelve themselves.

Once more she was at the desk with a small piles of books next to her. They were indeed a mixture -- some Tai Chi, some Yoga, some sword fighting and then there was the book she was reading about chemical elements and explosions.

One of these things was not like the other.

The books were behaving today.

She was willing to help with almost anything you need.

Once he pings in.

I need a nap.

With the Hive Queen calmed, there was nothing calling Ender to the library this time. But last week's conversation with Cassidy hadn't been unpleasant, and with a mostly-empty day ahead of him, he could do worse than pay her a visit.

"Morning, Cassidy," he greeted as he came in.

Cassidy looked up and smiled. "Good morning, Ender."

She had enjoyed their conversation last week, so she closed her book. "How are you today?"

"Doing fairly well at the moment," Ender said, coming up at the desk. "Definitely calmer than the weekend, thankfully."

Cassidy winced a little. "You had unexpected children suddenly show up, too? That was... unsettling."

She was trying to be polite.

"It definitely gives you a twist to your perspective," Ender replied, mildly. "I had two to deal with myself, but they were pretty quiet."

If just a bit upsetting.

"I had three," she said shaking her head. "All with different people and it was very confusing."

"I find it best not to think too hard about how they happened." ... Probably because of completely different reasons than most people, but still. "The question of how to bring a particular future around is the stuff of madness, I think."

She nodded in agreement. "They were all very cute, but one, not old enough to have children. Two, have a few years before children could even happen." After all, you couldn't have children until you managed your Virgin Night, after all -- which not happening for a long time. "And three, attempting to arrange futures like that can be dangerous."

"I think you're one of the few at this school who feels that way," Ender said, wryly. "It seems like every day someone's had a vision or heard a story that sends them tumbling forwards into half-baked plans to change the future."

"But don't they take into consideration how dangerous that can be?" Cassidy asked with worry in her tone. "Because, I know I haven't been here long, but I have been here long enough to know that there are other lives and timelines and just because a version of myself might be there, it doesn't give me any right to mess with things."

That was an interesting assortment of books at the front counter, wasn't it?

Henry kept popping out to see if they'd start fighting again.

"I think usually the gain seems more important than the danger," Ender said, philosophically. "Saving relatives, saving worlds, getting the right child. Control is a seductive thing."

... Meet Ender. Meet Ender's ability to turn anything into a debate on moral philosophy.
