Home Ec 7, Period 4, 2/16

"This week," Steve said, "we begin talking about food preparation. We begin with...knife skills. Don't panic! I'm not expecting you to be chopping up onions like a pro by the end of class. It's perfectly fine to go slowly and not cut your fingers off. But once you learn how to do things properly, and get some practice in, you'd be surprised by how much easier it becomes, and how much faster cooking goes. Someone else has already explained the rest of this much better than I ever could, so you're going to watch an episode of Good Eats." Steve cued up the projector.

When that was over, he said, "Now, we still have most of the hour left, so guess what? You're going to put what you've just learned to good use. At your stations you have everything you'll need to make the gazpacho you saw on the show--including a printout of the recipe, and gloves for use with the jalapeno. Please use them. I'm not going to make you concasse your tomatoes, of course. That's a little advanced for this class," Steve said wryly. "I've provided raw tomatoes for you to practice chopping on, and tomatoes already concasse for use in the recipe. If you feel like you need to see a segment of the episode again to get a handle on the technique, or if you have any questions, please feel free to ask. This class coming right after lunch, you might not be so excited to eat the results, but we have plastic takeaway containers, so you can always take it with you and chill it to eat later."

Alex could cook certain things but try anything too complicated and things were going to burn, explode or melt. Still, he paid attention to maybe pick up a tip or two.

Emma had to admit, she liked watching this video. There was some science in it!

...that didn't mean her gazpacho was going to be edible, despite paying close attention.

Alex picked up a knife and a tomato, slowly starting the chopping while he waited for a partner.

"Help me," Emma pleaded, carrying over her supplies. "If left to my own devices, I'm going to mix up the red pepper and the hot pepper, and poison someone."

"What makes you think I'll be any better?" Alex asked, glancing over at her in amusement. "I've burned soup before."

"If we set it on fire, we can each blame the other one and our dignity is intact," Emma pointed out. "We stand a better chance together than separately."

Cassidy was gleeful as she started cutting up the ingredients.

This one looked like she knew what she was doing, which was good.

"Hi, excuse me," Juliet said. "Mind helping me? I have no idea what I'm doing."

Cassidy gave her a friendly smile. "Sure. I'm Cassidy, by the way."

Bobby managed to keep all of his digits where they belonged, miraculously. Which was good because he didn't actually want to find out whether he could recreate them from ice. Or take Tony up on that offer to build him a robohand.

Unfortunately, the other people in the classroom had best watch out for unexpectedly airborne tomatoes, as very few of them seemed to be staying where they belonged.

One of those tomatoes managed to sail through the air with the greatest of ease and hit a telepath of his acquaintance.

By landing in her hair, Robert. Her hair. Which she'd even put-up in a messy bun to keep it from getting in her way while cooking.

Emma removed it with distaste, giving him a dirty look before throwing it right back at him. Hard.

To his credit, Bobby tried not to laugh when the tomato hit Emma?

Tried being the key word here, as he was still snickering when he himself was splattered with the remnants of his projectile fruit.

So, naturally, he reached for the cup of diced cucumbers and flung them back Emma's way.

Tony was pretty sure he could do all this with a food processor, you know. Because knife skills weren't his thing.

And his hair was still pink. So, he was just going to hide over here and think about machines to do this for him.

"It was a bet!" Yeah, that so made it better, Tony.
