"Let's talk about budgeting," Steve said. "Budgets are important. Why? You don't want to run out of money, whether that's a small allowance or what you make at your minimum wage job, or the whole bank." Certain people. "And you probably want to spend your money wisely, rather than on things that don't matter. A budget will help you do that." Steve proceeded to handwavily talk about how budgets work and how they could construct one, even (this might come as a shock to some members of the class) talking about how one could use computer software to keep track of one's monthly budget.
"Now, you don't have to worry about housing just yet, but you may be thinking it's too soon for you to start thinking about retirement. You're teenagers, right? Well. It's never too early to start thinking about saving for retirement. Don't fall into that trap. So, I've provided a sample budget worksheet for you guys to work with. I don't expect you to finish it today; sometimes these decisions are hard and you need to do some research to figure out how much you're actually spending. You can start working on it today, certainly, but your homework for the rest of the week is to figure out a budget and start trying to stick to it. Your assignment for today is to discuss what categories are important to you, that you're willing to spend more on to cut back in other areas."
