Greco-Roman Archaeology

Daniel is smiling goofily, still doodling on his notebook.

"Right, I hope you did your homework. May I have a volunteer to tell the class about Magna Graecia and one to talk about the Latins?"

The class is a discussion about these two cultures, led by the students. Daniel listens with half an ear, nodding and prompting where/if necessary.

"Right, to summarize
-Pre-Roman Italy was a mosaic of different ethnic and cultural groups
-Each is historically/archaeologically distinct; but had close cultural/ethnic connections
-In particular, they shared the experience of Orientalizing.

From this, Rome will emerge, and that will be our next lesson.

Now, for homework, I'd like an essay on how these cultures influenced the emergence of Rome.

Before you go, I'd like to ask you if you know someone who should be in this class, can you try and either bring them along, or get them to contact me? Because I'm working on a three strikes, and it's detention policy here, which I think is more than fair.

Thank you guys, I'll see you on Tuesday."

"Vell, at the most basic, Magna Graecia vas the southern area of Italy that vos orignally colonized by the Greeks. Through them, different aspects of Hellenistic culture vere spread to Italy- their language, culture, religion, and forms of government."

Sonia taps her pen on her notebook, thinking for a moment. "Vould that be Rhegion? The earliest date I could find for that colonization is 730 BC. After that vould be Croton, right? It's about twenty years later, but it seems to have some interesting historical significance."

Thomasina looks around to see whether anybody else intends to present on this and seeing nobody, offers her research. There is evidence that the city of Albus Longa was ruled by the king, Latinus, as early as the 9th century B.C. Some sources have him as king of the Etruscans, however, who, along with the Sammites, were some of the Latins greatest rivals.
