Getting Out of Tight Situations- Period 5- Class #5

When the students got to class today, they'd find themselves in the middle of a hilly forest area. At least it wasn't too humid or too cold this week?

"Hey, guys," Jaina greeted them. "Today you're going hiking. You can pick up a few essentials to take with you, the trail is marked, and you even get a companion on your hike." As she spoke, a nondescript teenage boy appeared next to her, waving at the students. "This is Bob. Something's going to happen on your hike, and I'm not going to tell you what. But once it happens, you're going to have to figure out what tools you have available to you and what you're going to do about it. Good luck, and I hope you all wore study shoes."

Bobby snagged a first aid kit and some matches, along with a carabiner and a length of rope.

And tried not to make faces at the simulated hiking companion. Bob, really?

James selected a container of water and a folding camp knife (out of curiosity). He did not change out of his modern boots.

Cara sighed before picking up a pack and putting water, rope, and bandages in it and attaching a knife to her belt. Oh, yes, she had been missing walking all over the countryside, really she had.

Ben picked up what normally went into his emergency pack anyway--rope, bacta patches, emergency rations, tiny collapsible tent (shhh, he got stuck in the woods a lot), and gave Bob an appraising look.

Harper was wearing very cute boots. At least, she thought they were cute, though most sensible people would think that they were too flimsy and had way too many patterns and colors. It was safe to say that they would hold up to today's hike.

She wasn't going to worry about that, though. Right now, she was grabbing as many essentials as she could think of and wondering if she could give Bob a makeover.

Bruce put together a pack with as much as he could conveniently fit into the bag. He didn't mind having it weigh him down slightly if it meant he was better prepared for anything.

Okay, so. The hike had been going pretty well, except for that whole "something was going to happen" thing that Bobby knew was on the horizon.

So when it did... well, at least he had rope to rappel down there and splint Bob's ankle.

Now the only problem was how to get back up to the trail. He didn't have the kind of supplies that would make climbing back up with an injured companion very easy, so he had to settle for trying to use the phone. It took some time with the way the phone kept cutting out, but eventually he got ahold of help.

This would've been so much easier if he'd used his powers, sure, but the whole point of taking this class was to learn how to deal with situations without them, so.

James was not paying attention to "Bob" or Bob's lack of walking skill as he was busy with the folding knife. Out of the corner of his eye he caught the movement as Bob fell into the ravine. He slipped the knife into his pocket and climbed down to see Bob holding his ankle, writhing on the ground in pain. James, who wrongly fancied himself a healer as all those who lived on the streets did, quickly determined the ankle was broken or sprained, and used the folding knife to cut strips of Bob's shirt. He tied a nearby branch to Bob's ankle to hold it, and wrapped the rest of the strips around the ankle.

"Now we make it back up the ravine," James said to Bob, whose face paled. Bob went even paler as James told the story of Roald and his broken legs, and his death, as he helped the teen to his foot.

By the time Bob took his tumble, Cara was grateful for it shutting him up. At least until he started on about his leg. Probably broken, sprains never got that kind of volume.

Then he passed out while she was splinting it. Great, now she was going to have to wait for him to come around or carry him out of here.

Ben's work with the Force in a healing capacity was...mostly theoretical, so he reached for the bacta patches first. "This won't hurt in a minute," he said soothingly to Bob, reaching out into the Force (and hoping it would work in a simulated environment) to keep alert for anything out there trying to eat them.

Because that was how things tended to go when Ben went into the woods.

. . . any resemblance to a utility belt's worth of equipment that Stephanie assembled was purely coincidental, thank you, despite the Leatherman, flashlight, signal flares, first aid supplies, and a ridiculous amount of rope, just to name the things she picked out first.

Bob would not shut up the entire hike, which meant that Steph kept snarking back at him, but as annoying as he was she didn't think twice about utilizing that ridiculous amount of rope to half-rappel, half-plummet down the ravine after him. The problem was that it wasn't her grapple gun and she knew she didn't have the upper body strength to haul them both back up hand over hand with just a rope. (Herself, yes. Two people, no.) Which was okay; having fancy high-tech equipment she hadn't had to scrounge up for herself was still a novelty, and a luxury at that.

The signal flares, she quickly realized, weren't going to do much good in the woods -- well, they would, but the large amounts of bad that could come of accidentally setting the forest on fire would cancel that out.

"Oh, quit your whimpering for two minutes while I try to set this," she grumbled at Bob while she saw about setting his ankle; spending too much time with Tim "let me just dislocate my thumb to get out of these handcuffs" Drake skewed her sense of people's pain tolerance.

In the end, she managed to rig him up a little shelter (and gave him the Leatherman to shut him up about being unprotected in case a bear attacked), took his phone, and used the rope to get back out of the ravine long enough to find a cellular signal and call for help.

Bob and Harper were in the middle of a spirited conversation on the subject of legwarmers when he took his little spill down the side of the ravine.

Harper's legwarmers turned out to be a lifesaver in terms of making an emergency bandage. It was also a good thing she had her knitting needles in her backpack because they made for a pretty decent splint. After stabilizing Bob's ankle, she figured the safest thing to do was stay put, stay warm, and use Bob's cell phone to dial 911 when they could get a signal.

Bruce and Bob were hiking in silence (well, Bruce was silent and he was ignoring whatever Bob was saying) before Bob's little accident. Once that happened, Bruce set up the rope to rappel down to meet Bob. After quickly identifying the injury, Bruce used the contents of the first aid kit to brace Bob's foot, then lifted Bob over his shoulder as he made his way back to the rope.

"Don't worry, the rope's strong enough. Just don't panic and make me lose my grip.

Yeah, he was going to just carry Bob to the ranger station. He was like that.

"Jaina?" Ender said, once the class had ended. He had no intention of disturbing anything, after all - his request wasn't class-related. "Have you got a minute?"

Bruce was a little annoyed that he didn't have his utility belt to carry all of the necessary equipment in today. On the other hand, it might have looked a little weird if he DID have something like that at the ready.
