George was going to wait until everyone was there, and then give it another five or ten minutes for good measure. Just in case maybe someone else wanted to fucking talk for once.

"Fine," she said. "Great. It's Apathy Club. I started it last fucking semester by accident, trying to get detention, and somehow instead I had to run a stupid fucking Apathy Club. Who knows how it got carried over, but here we are. So, welcome to fucking Apathy Club."

Okay, technically, she'd resubmitted the forms, but not even a gun to her head would get her to admit that one.

"Those of you who were here before, you have no excuse, and I don't know what the fuck is wrong with you for coming back. Those of you weren't, you still signed up for something called fucking Apathy Club, so I don't know what's wrong with you, either. There aren't fucking activities. We don't go on exciting trips here. Whatever the fuck you think you're getting into, it's way lamer than that, and it's your own damn fault for signing up."

She waved a hand. "I dunno. If you want to be fucking lame and introduce yourself, go ahead. I'm George, that's my introduction, and I don't give a fuck who you are."

She slumped back in her chair. "I hate this fucking club."

This was George, rolling her eyes at Jack.

"I just wanted detention," she said. "And now I have a fucking club. How does that happen?"

"You're special like that?" he guessed.

"This school is way too literal," George said, shaking her head. "I thought about using it to protest something or other, try to make them really regret it? But ... y'know."

Effort.

"They probably have their hands full with making sure we don't die of weird," Jack said with sympathy. "I wasn't sure how this would look on my college transcripts, but when I saw you were running it, I had a hard time passing up the sign-up sheet."

"Because ... you like hanging out with me?" George asked.

He happened to be hot. Sue her.

Jack shrugged. "I like hanging out with you and I haven't been good at tracking you down." Meaning he'd been too wrapped up in himself to track her down. "Now I'll get to see you every week, even if I fail at gracing you with my presence every other day."

"I'll have to be extra-charming so you get the full effect," George said.

'Extra-charming' would probably involve saying 'fuck' a lot. You're welcome, Jack.

"Should I be worried?"

Well. Now that he mentioned it?

"Probably," she said easily. "The full concentrated dose of me might be a lot to take."

"I can handle it," Jack said confidently.

"I should make you sign a waiver," George decided. "So you can't sue me later when you take it back."

"That takes away all the uncertainty and fun." He folded his arms across his chest. "Haven't you ever wanted to see if someone could handle you, no holds barred?"

George ried to think of a good counterargument to that, and failed.

"No waivers," she sighed. "But if you end up suing me, I'm so kicking you out of the club."

Which she probably didn't have authority to do, anyway.

"You'll kick me out for being bad at being apathetic before then."

"Not if I'm way too apathetic to bother," she countered.

"Touché. What are being apathetic about today? Are there topics or are we generally apathetic?"

"Either-or," George said. "I mean, the week of Valentine's, we'll probably be apathetic about how love is a sick joke and invented holidays are a cash grab by corporations, but most week we stare at each other and shrug."

"You don't like Valentine's?"

"Nooot especially," George admitted. "Nauseating couples, frilly pink decorations, and everyone tries to make you feel like a loser for being single."

Which George was. Perpetually.
