Teamwork 101 -- Period 1 [Class #4] [Monday]

Today the class had been left notice, again in Genesis’ elaborate handwriting, to meet down in the Danger Shop.

When they arrived, they would find the Danger Shop transformed to look like a ballroom.

“Ballroom dancing,” Genesis began without preamble, or indeed, even a glance at his co-teacher, “is something that has long been held to exemplify grace, poise, and elegance. It can also, unlike some other dances, not be performed without a partner.”

“It’s somethin’ that most of you are gonna have to deal with, at least while you’re here bein’ a student, if you don’t wanna be stuck against the loner wall in the gym at dances, yo,” Reno added, from where he’d perched, in his chair. Which he’d dragged down just to sit in, because it was his chair, dammit, and Genesis had managed to snag it before him for the first few classes. “And knowin’ how to step around without breakin’ people’s feet is pretty useful, when you wanna impress a date, yo.”

Trips to the clinic were very rarely the hallmark of a good date.

Rarely, but not outside of the realm of possibility. Genesis merely looked pleased as he snapped his fingers and music began, a quick tempo’d dance.

“Pair up,” he murmured, loud enough for everyone to hear him, but only just. “And dance. Try to look like you’re enjoying it.”

Though there's not much of one.

It was quite possible Momoko was late to class. It was quite possible this was because she was hoping to keep the sign redirecting the class.

And try not to break anyone's feet.

Oh, how much Wesley had no idea how to dance. ~~The icon said it all.~~ But as far as he was concerned, he was quite coordinated, so he waited patiently for a partner.

From what Karla had seen of other classes, the hardest part was getting people to dance. As a TA, she figured her job today was to get as many people out on the floor as possible. Spotting Wesley--someone who looked almost eager to dance--meant Karla was beelining in his direction.

"Would you care to dance?" she asked with a small smile.

"I would," Wesley replied gratefully. Better Karla than some of the other people in this class, anyway, and she seemed actually nice.

But then there was the whole thing where he had all the coordination of a yo-yo. Sorry, Karla.

Karla held out her hand to grasp his, bringing her other hand up to his shoulders. "Do you have much experience?" she asked, nodding in time to the music. "Dancing is pretty simple, really."

Surely Wesley couldn't be all that bad at it! Could he?

Oh, but he could.

"Quite a bit, actually," he said. It was true. The Watchers' Academy had taught him a little bit. But the impression it made was... negligible.

Unfortunately, Wes talking and dancing at the same time? Not so great for Karla's shoes. Sorry, Karla.

Karla tried not to wince after Wesley stepped on her toes yet again. Thank the Darkness it was wintertime and she wasn't wearing anything with open toes. She might end up bruised anyway.

"Umm, I don't think I'm familiar with with this dance that we're doing now, exactly," she said, almost jumping backwards to get her foot out of the way.

Hmmm. Momoko liked dancing, but she totally wasn't used to this kind. She was willing to try, though, and glad Karla had already taught her a few steps.

If only she remembered them.

Dancing, Squall knew how to do. In fact, he was rather good at it. And in spite of himself, he'd begun to actually enjoy it ever since he'd started dancing with Rinoa.

He wasn't entirely sure he'd enjoy it without Rinoa there, but whatever. He nodded at Momoko. "Shall we?"

Momoko smiled and held out her hand. "Of course! I'm not very good at this kind, though, so you may regret offering!"

Squall shrugged. "Just follow my lead and try not to screw up too badly."

He took her hand and led her out onto the floor.

That's either the best advice ever or the worst!" She laughed as she followed him. "So you know how? I am pretty good at other types of dancing, I just never really learned this kind."

Squall nodded. "SeeD members are trained in all sorts of useful skills. And if you don't know the moves, you can always just sway side to side." He shrugged. "I'm not any good with other kinds of dancing, actually."

"That totally makes sense for you, really." Momoko watched her feet as they danced. "If you don't let the music in, you can't dance to it. And you totally don't seem the type to let music in."

Squall began moving them around the floor. If the rest of the couples had been moving in the same pattern he was trying to, the sight would be impressive. As it was, it just seemed a little random.

"You make the music sound like a virus."

"A virus? That's totally mean." It was odd how this kind of dancing made you feel... important? Momoko chuckled, doing her best to keep up and not have to doubletime to match his lead. It really did feel like 'leading' in this type of dance.

"It's not like you're sick. Dancing should be something you want to do; it should make you happy."

"Or it could be something you're required to do as a class exercise," Squall added.

He shortened his strides so that it would hopefully be easier for her to keep up.

"Just because you're required to do something doesn't mean you can't be happy about it, too." She was able to keep up now, thank you, and finding the sweeping moves easy to fall into.

And ask them for a dance!

After placing coffee somewhere that the teachers could get them, Chloe retreated to a wall to watch and wait to give Karla her own coffee. It looked like one of those days where they would need the caffeine.

She'll be happy to dance with anyone, though.

"Life-saver," Karla said, accepting the coffee gratefully. "I'll get it next week, then?"

"That sounds like a plan," Chloe said with a grin.

"Or maybe hot cider..." Karla mused. "Though cider does lack the caffeine. Hmmm. Tough choices."

Dancing, Karla could handle, especially real dancing and not the gyrating to music that most school dances degenerated into.

She really needed to track down her old dancing master and apologize for all of that biting.

And ask them to dance!

Genesis was there, quite naturally, and eyeing Reno mildly dubiously. Really now, he hadn't been so clingy to the chair when he'd dragged it down to the Danger Shop.

Reno was such a child in some ways.

Reno had earned this chair today, Godsdammit. But he'd get out of it, he supposed, if he really did have to get up to dance.

Which, he knew, he did. He and Genesis had agreed weeks back that they were going to do everything that they'd decided to make the kids do, during this semester.

Which probably explained why he didn't seem to be in any hurry to get up.

"Reno."

Oh look! His least favourite looming SOLDIER who lived on the island!

"Genesis." Reno was so not giving up his chair, damn it.

Especially when there was looming.

"If you're gonna ask if you can have this dance, I expect flowers first, zoto."

"Next week," he said, dismissively. "A true partner would accept that."

And yes, Reno was going to get the most obnoxiously large bouquet that Genesis could buy next week.

"That how that works?" Reno quirked a crooked little grin. "See, now I'm gonna hold you to that, yo. I ain't never been given flowers for dancin', before."

"Another way," he murmured, "that Turks are different from SOLDIERs."

Because, yes, that did tend to happy with the 1sts.

Genesis held out his hand, a smirk in his eyes. "Shall we dance?"

I never know what to say here! Music is mostly Generic Ballroom Music, though it's moddable if you want a specific ballroom dance song to come on, but it's not going to play anything that's not ballroom appropriate.

And stuff.
