Getting Out of Tight Situations- Period 5- Class #4

Today it was very cold in the Danger Shop, as the students would find themselves on the side of a highway at night, surrounded by a few good inches of snow. Jaina herself was suited up in a coat and gloves, standing beside a car. "There's a clothes rack behind you for the moment," she told them. "Suit up and listen, though I'm pretty sure you can make a guess of what I'm going for here."

As the students put on their winter wear, she went on, "This is your car. You had been driving it till it decided to just stop working. You have plenty of gas, but for some reason your car just refuses to do the only thing cars do anymore. It's a few miles each way before you can get to a gas station, and it's a few hours till dawn. What you do about this situation is all up to you. So if there aren't any questions, let's get the first person going."

...It was cold?

Still, Bobby grabbed a jacket and hat pretty much at random, basically just for appearances sake.

Bruce grabbed a coat, hat, and some thin work gloves. He was going to diagnose the problem and fix the engine, but he couldn't do that with bulky gloves. Just something that would keep the chill of cold metal from affecting his hands would be enough.

The clothing that was provided seemed awfully boring to Harper. But the only thing that mattered right now was that it was warm. She grabbed the most interesting-looking jacket and hat before turning back to listen to the lecture.

James grabbed a coat and hat in muted colors (he passed over a coat that was a shade of green he'd rarely come across) and a pair of thick gloves. He was already wearing a pair of warm modern boots.

Jake did what he always did in cold situations and ignored the whole winter clothes thing.

Stephanie found a nice warm down jacket (eggplant, not purple) and matching hat, with black gloves and a black scarf.

. . . wrapping the scarf around her face meant she could hide the smirk, and therefore not have to explain her private source of amusement.

Honestly, all she needed was a pair of ski goggles with opaque white lenses and a thoroughly random legband.

Ben bundled himself into a winter coat that looked suspiciously like what his dad and uncle had been wearing on Hoth, wishing that the coat would last past the Danger Shop.

It would be handy to have the next time the power went out.

Bobby was sitting cross-legged in the snow as he waited his turn, not looking particularly bothered by the prospect of being soaked by fake-snow. Not looking much of anything, really, except possibly sleep-deprived.

The set-up sounded like something from an old horror film, which was actually the only thing that troubled Ender a little. Not that he knew engines well enough to know for sure he could get the car working; he was just mentally preparing for any surprises he wouldn't want to deal with.

James paced absently, trying to keep warm by moving.

James paced to keep warm, absently rubbing his hands, wondering if it were better to wait in the car out from the cold or start walking.

Yeah, okay, normally he would've just built himself an ice-slide and left the car.

Well. Normally he probably would've been sliding in the first place. Or taking X-Factor's jet. But that was so not the point.

Popping the hood, he sort of... half-heartedly poked at the insides of the engine, without really the slightest clue as to what he was looking for.

He managed to get the storage open after a few minutes of exploring the car. Wrapping the blanket around him, he set off in the direction the car was facing, rather than wait in the car and trust a kind soul would happen by.

See, he could just change and run to the station to get someone but that'd just be stupid right?

Instead, Jake opened up to hood to figure out what the problem was. It's what he did.

What Cara knew about cars could be inscribed on the head of a pin with room to spare, and while she had travelled at night before, blundering around in the dark with no clue as to where you were and where you where going without any pressing need to it was just foolish. So after poking around the car long enough to find the blanket, she wrapped herself in it and stretched out along the back seat to wait for the dawn.

Yeah, look, Steph wasn't allowed to touch the controls in the Batmobile, much less the Batplane; did anyone really think she'd be allowed to look at the insides yet?

She knew a very, very little about basic things to look for when a car wouldn't start; that was inevitable when her mom drove a clunker that occasionally threatened to make her late for work. It wasn't much, though, and poking around under the hood was no help whatsoever in figuring out what was wrong.

Well, it wasn't that far to the gas station, and she had a phone, and it wasn't like she was accidentally discovering people trapped in tunnels under the drifts in a freak Gotham blizzard or anything, so she could walk the -- wait, what if there were people trapped in tunnels under the -- okay, no, Steph, focus.

In lieu of an actual flag she clipped the bright red jumper cables to the car antenna to give her something to spot on the way back, shoved her hands in her pockets, and started trudging down the road toward the gas station.

Of course Ben had to crack open the hood and try to tinker before he'd be ready to give up and walk.

Earth-based cars weren't exactly his area of expertise, so he was mostly checking to see if all of the wires were attached correctly before trying the engine again.
