Library, [01/23]

Today was a 'busy work' sort of day in the library. Jonothon had even showed up for his shift early, like he'd threatened to do earlier in the week, armed with incentive and not much else.

There were things that were eating at him. So he had to throw himself bodily into whatever task he might notice today, because if he was thinking about alphabetizing the misplaced books throughout the entire sci-fi section, or about straightening all of the dog-eared pages that he stumbled over, or poking through the system to figure out who needed to get notices for late books, then he wasn't thinking about anything else.

That worked nicely in his favour.

Off to the side, he had a few books waiting, at least. He'd taken a few moments today to dig out a few favourites, as per Rosalind's request. Something else to drown his thoughts under, he was certain. But he wasn't complaining.

Just in case Jono happens to be wandering around too much for you to actually be able to catch up with him.

Who will, at least, take a few moments here or there to poke at things at the desk, so with patience, you should be able to track him down, at least.

When he pings in!

I'm not sure where yesterday went, but it doesn't feel like the weekend should be half-finished already.

... Not like I have any reason to complain, granted. I mean, my equivalent of going back to work involves heading to school for three hours to make pretty pictures in the thiiiiird dimensiooooon. Or, as I have been putting it more often lately, wrestling with the stupid polygons in the stupid space toaster in the stupid space kitchen that I've been modelling. :| I need to beat my space refrigerator into submission with the split polygons tool and a buttload of extruding and bevelling and I'm certain you all care.

Jono was wandering around, unlike a few weeks ago where she'd tracked him down amongst the demon related books, this week, Rosalind gauged her timing carefully and settled herself down behind the desk.

He'd come back eventually and, in the meantime, it meant that she could study the library from a slightly new perspective.

And she waited, patiently.

Jono was so absorbed in what he was doing, he barely realized that there was somebody in his seat when he finally did return to the desk, with an armload of books that had been left here and there which needed sorting.

//Am I supposed to ask you for recommendations, today? Seems a touch backwards, luv.//

He dropped the books onto the counter with a loud whump.

"A touch," she allowed, with a glance up at him that held a smile in her eyes. "I decided that as you'd have to come back here at some point, this was the best location to wait for you."

//Better than standing around, I suppose. Or sitting on th'desk.// Jono did not much care for people who sat on the desk. Counter-sitting was his job. Especially when there were chairs located conveniently nearby. That was just how he rolled. //Still interested in those books you'd asked for? They're not... particularly happy, any of them.//

Which was what made them Vonnegut.

Please. Rosalind was far too classy to ever sit on a desk.

Leaning against it, however, she did fairly frequently.

"I can handle unhappiness," she said, with a faint smile.

//And how's the end of th'world?// Jono turned a kind of skeptical look toward his book pile. The one where every molecule of water on the planet froze into a sort of rearranged form of ice was not exactly a happy book. Nor was the one about the man who was unstuck in time, living through the best and worst moments of his life while trying to write a book about the war. Jonothon didn't tend to turn toward fluffy books about fairy princesses, when he could help it.

The writing was simple and complex and they made people think, and so they were the first things that Jonothon often reached for, when he wanted to read something familiar to him. And unlike that one about the timequake, they had actual plotlines that could be followed. That gave them bonus marks in his eyes, too.

... Though he might pull out that one later, for himself.

All persons, living and dead, are purely coincidental.

"I think I can handle it," she said, a touch more dryly.

If only because she knew of her own death and that things after had not gone well.

//Ice-Nine, then,// Jono said, holding up the book in question. //And Schlachthof Fünf.//

He set them both down on the desk in front of her, nudging them her way. Not daring to just pass them too her. Too close. That would still be too close to touch.

//If th'first isn't to yer liking, I won't be heartbroken or anything. But they're both worth taking a look at, if you ask me.//

I can tell you where yesterday went. It went in a flurry of future children who may or may not be able to teleport and give their parents heart attacks, making God hug puppies, Jono's abs, Auntie Emma's "private" times, slashing Warren (but not in happy fun ways), handcuffs, wolfpacks, irrationally hating on Paige, reasons to punch Warren, Raven the dominatrix queen, future abuses of Jono's sonic powers, the validity or lack thereof of "Star" as a name, kneeling before Zod, turning Australian at 1 AM, and, of course, HE RISES. HE RISES!

...I just love out of context theater.

... THERE IS NOTHING IRRATIONAL ABOUT HATING ON PAIGE.

YES BUT WILL JONO BE THAT UNDERSTANDING WHEN RAVEN AND KARLA START PLOTTING EVIL THINGS TO DO TO HER?

WELL...

HOW EVIL? AND WILL HE GET TO WATCH?

It's terribly tempting to toss her into a wood chipper with a "HUSK THIS, BITCH."

She eyed the way he pushed the books across the counter and said nothing about it. He would get over it in his own time and her pushing him would accomplish nothing.

But push him further away.

"I'll look at them," she replied, picking them up. "I've read worse, after all."

Those faerie books, for instance... and she was peculiarly attached to those.

//You have,// Jono agreed with a roll of his eyes that was very nearly good-natured, even. He'd read the fairy books as well, after all.

Never again.

//For what it's worth, I actually did take yer request for reading material seriously this time, luv.//

"I would never have guessed that you hadn't the last time," she murmured, but lightly.

//It had been an inspired choice, perhaps,// Jono noted, trying for a light tone of his own. //Th'cover sparkled.//

Plus, it was brainless fantasy, which was essentially what she'd asked for, so...

"It did," she said agreeably. "And was entirely in pastel colours."

//Really, if you stared at it long enough, I imagine you could just about see that fairy flutter right off th'page.//

No. You couldn't.

Which was for the best.

//If you don't like the Vonnegut, I might be able to dig up more books like those fairy ones, if you rather.//

"I don't know if I'll like the books or not," she replied, arching an eyebrow at him. "Allow me to try before deciding I will not, kindly."

//I'm not deciding,// Jono replied, shrugging and trying not to sound maybe a little stung. //I'm just trying not to block you in or anything. I mean. Tastes differ...//

He was maybe a touch oversensitive about trying to stay on the good sides of people, today.

//Let me know what you think when you've read some, maybe.//
