History of the Ancient World - First Class Meeting

History of the Ancient World
TTh 12:30-3:30 pm

There are few rules and there are consequences for every action or non-action. It’s not mandatory you show up - class participation is only 50% of your grade.

Course description: A closer examination of the beginnings of civilization in Egypt and Mesopotamia, the rise and decline of Greece, the Roman Republic and Empire to 180 A.D.

Course Prerequisites: None

Grade Evaluation:
• Class participation 50%
• Written assignments 15%
• Exams 35%

Course Text: TBD

For this session, check in and general discussion. Small as we are gives greater leeway in what material we cover during the course of the class. Structure can be loosened in favor of deeper analysis of specific interests.

What piques your interest? What would you prefer to examine in greater detail?

(Latecomers - Sign up still open.)

*walks in and takes a seat in the front*
Well, since it's kind of empty I guess I'll start. I'm particulary interested in Roman history. They were the masters when it came to military tactics and I'd like to learn how they were able to conquer most of the known world without magic.

Uh. Hello. I'm latelatelate, but I heard sign up is still open! I will go and leave my name for the rosters after the class.

*sits in the front next to Draco*

*clears throat and leans forward a bit too enthusiastically*

Right. I'm very interested in the decline and fall of civilizations and how to bring it about. I'm also a big admirer of empires - how they were built, and where one might theoretically need to poke to make them fall apart.

*gazes dreamily into the distance*

I'd like to study how the ancient religions of Greece and Rome affected commerce, the arts, and politics. I am very interested in the gods omg, specifically Apollo and how worshiping them affected the history of the Ancient World..... sir.

Evelyn enters and sits in one of the desks near the back of the room.

"I'm mostly interested in how the different societies came about and what caused them to fail after so long."

Summer takes a seat and relaxes, ready to learn.
