Fighting With Powers [Monday, Fourth Period]

The Danger Shop was set up like a dojo today. Big, open, with mats down on the floor. Max's usual smirk was absent as he looked over his students. The weekend had convinced him more than ever that they needed more training. So they'd be ready. "Now that you have all had a couple of weeks to get used to the idea behind this class, we're going to really get down to business. Beginning today, we're going to begin taking each week to focus on a specific power, or class of powers."

Max smiled easily. "It's highly unlikely that any single one of you will have every power that we'll cover, but that's fine. You'll manage to learn something anyway." And some people would have no powers, which was still fine.

There were a few seconds of silence as Max surveyed his students, making notes in his head about who needed the most watching today. "Today we're going to be talking about magical projectiles. It's a broad category, and it basically covers any method you have for attacking that happens at range repeatedly. Throwing energy, certain forms of concentrated telekinesis either with or without some sort of physical projectile to manipulate, the ability to pull a near-infinite supply of purely mundane weapons out of thin air... all of these are what I'm talking about."

It was a broad category, and it included a pretty diverse group, but Max was concerned with the tactical possibilities more than the specific mechanics.

"Today the Danger Shop is set to stop projectiles from actually hitting anyone." Energy projectiles would simply fizzle out, and physical ones would lose their momentum and fall. "So we're going to get in some real practice."

Max pointed to his right. "If you can use a projectile, you're over here." Then to his left. "If you can't, over here. Now find someone across from you and pair up." He looked at the group on his right. "The advantage of a magical projectile is that you can stay at range for as long as your power holds out. But this is only true if you know how to stay at range." Then he turned his attention to the group on the left. "If you find yourself fighting someone who has projectiles like this, your only real option is to close the distance. Run, dodge, use cover, but get in close where you can hit back."

His gaze shifted back and forth between the two groups. "Just because the Danger Shop is going to make any projectiles harmless, I don't want to see anyone just running forward into them. Treat this as real, try not to get hit."

"And just to make sure that everyone does this properly..." Max smiled slowly. "There are rules. Start at a distance of fifty feet from each other. If you get hit with a projectile, stop and go back out to that distance. Your goal is to tag the other person without getting hit."

"I'll be watching, so don't be surprised if I stop by go offer a few tips." Or if he yells at you for taking this too lightly. Or if he yells at you just to make sure you're paying attention. Or if he just yells at you.

"Now pair off and get to it."

Aaaand this would be Stephanie, sitting with her chin in her hands and trying to figure out how much projectile-dodging practice she could get in, and pass it off as lots of dodgeball sessions in gym class.

Now, projectile-throwing practice, that would be nice too, but however cool her Robinarangs were (that was an awesome name, thank you) they didn't count as magical. Even if she could explain them away. Damn.

Looked like it was going to be Team Dodging for her.

Yeah...Karla wasn't so up for the chatting today. Or the listening. In fact, she was just going to lean against a wall and wait for the class to be over.

Tara glanced over to Karla, wondering if the girl would want -- no, need -- to yell at her again.

It wasn't as if it would be undeserved.

"Are you going to do the sparring?" she asked softly. "I ... don't think I can. Today."

Something bitter and cold flashed through Karla's eyes, but she swallowed and said, "No. I've had my fill of fighting for awhile."

She was trying hard not to be resentful of Tara, to remember that she'd been just as possessed and manipulated as the rest of them, but it was hard. Possibly because forgiving Tara for what she'd done while possessed would mean starting to forgive herself, too. Possibly because she couldn't not see Tara commanding them to attack Raven. Possibly for both those reasons and a hundred more.

It was complicated, but she was trying.

"How are you doing?" she asked, stiffly.

Rinoa approached Karla, hesitantly, then reached to put a hand on the other girl's shoulder. One that she could very easily withdraw if it wasn't welcome.

Cassidy took a little awhile to figure out what side she should be on.

She could throw blasts and power and her extra training with Mr. Genesis was helping her try to blend her Craft with other things.

However, she wasn't very good at it yet, so she should probably stay on the dodging side for today.

For a change Dru had heard radio, so she was watching certain people in the class and wondering exactly what had gone down.

As far as class, she was definitely going to be on Team Dodge'em.

Leda was one of those what could use projectiles. She had her own magical energy blasts, and she could throw things magically. She stood at one side of the room and looked for a partner.

Blossom's yo-yo was a projectile, right? Her hairbows were definitely, but she only used those if she really needed to. Momoko could also use projectiles that were not her yo-yo, not that she carried them around with her.

Soooo, her hand went up. "Centurion? If I do this as me, can I borrow a slingshot?"
