Adventures, Capers and Escapes - Danger Shop, Thursday, Period 3

The Doctor met the class outside the Danger Shop, which was never a good sign. He waited for everyone to gather before addressing the group. "In most martial arts discplines, before you get to all of the interesting things like breaking a block of wood with your head, you have to learn how to fall properly. In this class, before you get to learn all of the very interesting, useful and magnificent things I'm going to teach you, you have to learn one thing that will be vital to any situation that might be considered an adventure, caper or escape."

He opened the doors to reveal the bridge of a space ship. In fact, it looked a lot like the ship from Galaxy Quest if you were familiar with it. Even if you weren't familiar with it, it looked a lot like the ship from Galaxy Quest, but there was a good chance you wouldn't notice.

"In you go. Ship's plummeting out of orbit. It's going to crash into the planet in about an hour. Fifty five minutes if you want to be precise. The crew has abandoned ship. Everything still works, but it's not pulling out of its descent for some reason. The technology is pretty intuitive, if you're into that sort of thing, but you can all stop the ship from crashing - or at least make it crash gracefully, without everything going completely smooshed - if you work together. Go on, learn to crash and live to crash another day."

[OOC: The ship's systems are moddable. Are they push button? Do they respond to voice commands? Why isn't it pulling up? Why did the ship's crew abandon their posts? Who will try to lead? Who will follow orders? Who will argue their guts out and leave everyone else to crash because they can't shut up and concentrate? You're not restricted to the bridge either.]

Given the Doctor's speech Cara was quite certain this was going to involve perilous peril. Call it an instinct.

Chloe was really sure that this was not going to be a fun experience...

Yeah, she didn't trust that Doctor.

In her case that gave her the more reason to be curious.

Whatever was going on inside the Danger Shop, Ariel was bouncing a little on her toes because she wanted to get in there and have an adventure. Or a caper. Or an escape!

Either way, she hated waiting.

Alex wasn't exactly sure about today's class but, hey, at least it was simulation... right?

Yep. Peril. Cara was so surprised by this, really she was.

The first thought that crossed Elphaba's mind was that this is what happened when you relied too much on tik-toks. She then quickly did not say it out loud, knowing full well it was highly unhelpful.

She also had never seen an episode of Galaxy Quest in her life, so helpfulness was going to be limited.

"If someone can tell me what to do, I'll do it," she said. She was hoping someone else would have a better idea of what to do.

Leia went for the controls, trying to stop the ship from falling, or if failing that, slow it down.

"So you know what to do?", asked Charlie as she leaned over the controls.

She looked like she knew, but when did that ever mean anything?

"I know how to fly a ship," Leia said, glancing sideways at Charlie. "Not this particular one, but a lot of designs are similar."

Charlie nodded lightly. "I suppose the gravitational force is pulling us, and the engines of the ship can't put enough power to pull us away, right?" She could do the thinking, but she didn't want to touch a thing.

"The Doctor guy said everything works, so..."

"I'm trying to find if something is killing the power to the engines," Leia said. "Obviously the crew gave up before they found the problem, but I'm willing to bet I can."

Charlie would have insisted that if the teacher said that everything was working, then everything was working, but hey, he could have said that on purpose.

"What about...re-routing energy from things we don't need to the engines to give them some extra juice? Perhaps enough to land rather than crash-land?" A beat. "Woah, I never thought I would say something like that out loud."

Leia would have pointed out if everything was really working, the ship wouldn't be about to crash on the planet below. Hence...there was some sort of problem that had to be fixed.

"It was probably deliberate sabotage," Leia muttered, half to herself. "Maybe they want to crash this into some sort of structure to destroy it, and they've tried to jam the controls to prevent anyone from stopping it. Fortunately, they didn't count on us. I think I can reroute power from weapons and life-support and gravity in empty areas to give us what we need."

Re: On the Crashing Ship

[identity profile] pyromanyac.livejournal.com 2011-01-13 05:00 pm (UTC)(link)
"That makes sense." She was starting to get into the scenario, at least. "Maybe the ship itself was important for a reason. We don't know what else is around here."

And that gave her an idea. "Well, if it was sabotage, then you are most likely not going to be able to solve everything from here. But if you can find what is not working as it should, I can go and take a look?" It was better than staring at Leia doing everything.

"There could be something in the engines themselves," Leia mused. "Do you know your way around a ship to know what's out of place?

Charlie just shrugged. "Show me a map? And you could probably access the comm system and guide me, anyway." She could link their minds, but ew, contact.

Helen sighed and went to the consoles to see if she could determine what was causing the problem and if there was anything she could do to stop it.

Was it bad of her to just want to see how realistically they would crash?

Claudia took a moment to go "oh crap, a crashing space ship!" then let the moment pass and went for some of the data consoles. "If I can get enough information," she said, to no one in particular. "I might be able to work out a safer angle of attack for a crash, at least."

It was a SPACESHIP. Obviously, that meant the controls were voice-activated. What sort of lame-o aliens would have computers that didn't talk?

"COMPUTER!" Hank shouted, addressing his command vaguely at the ceiling of the room. "Stop the ship from crashing!"
