Paranormal Activity 101, Tuesday, January 4th

When students filtered into the classroom on Tuesday they'd see a new teacher sitting at the front desk, immersed in a texting spree with somebody. He made sure that his phone was put away the second class started, however. Had to set a good example and everything.

"Welcome everybody. Just to make sure everyone is in the right class: You all know this is Paranormal Activity 101, yes?" Alaric waited a minute just to make sure anybody who had came into the wrong class had a chance to make a swift exit. "Okay, good. I'm Alaric Saltzman, but please, call me either Ric or Mr. Saltzman. Nobody calls me Alaric."



"I was going to start this class off with some spiel about how this class is just for fun and vampires aren't real, et cetera, et cetera, but five minutes in this place has let me know that you aren't the average bunch of students that I usually deal with," Alaric said with a smile. "So let's go into this with an open mind and a willingness to learn, shall we?"

"In this class we will be covering a new supernatural being every week, with a brief historical overview and ways you can bring it down if you have the unfortunate luck to be in a situation where one is after you," he said. "Now, just because I will be teaching you these things, it does not mean I want you to go out there and play hero. You shouldn't hunt without the proper training and this class is not the proper training. It's an overview so that maybe you'll have a chance at survival in emergencies."

"And," Alaric leaned against his desk and crossed his arms over his chest. "I am well aware that not everything that goes bump in the night is evil and should be hunted. So while I will tell you how to hurt and even kill the supernatural beings we'll be covering, I want you all to know that it should be taken on a case by case basis. Don't go killing just because you can."

Wow, this was definitely a freeing teaching experience, that was for sure.

"So, today is going to be an easy day. I want introductions from each of you. Your name, age, your experience with anything of the supernatural kind and something you would like to learn about," he said. "I specialize in vampires but I'm sort of a research nerd, so if I haven't heard of what you want to know more about I'm more than willing to read more about it."

"Oh, and I've already picked Ms. Forbes as my TA," Alaric started, gesturing at Caroline. "So feel free to bother her if you have any questions that you don't want to ask me."

Bod interest was immediately piqued when Professor Saltzman started his lecture. He leaned forward on his elbows, not taking any notes but listening closely anyway.

Kate was paying pretty rapt attention to the lecture. Couldn't help it, the subject matter had come to be a fairly major feature in her life lately, and she found herself feeling pleased that Mr. Saltzman thought to mention that the supernatural wasn't all black and white when it came to evil.

She was also in no way pointedly not looking at a certain someone she really should've expected to see in this class. Nuh uh. Of course not.

Raven liked Alaric so far, and was very glad he said to judge supernatural beings on a case by case basis. That mean he wasn't going to try to automatically kill her once he found out she was a demon.

One day she might be able to apply that same thinking to vampires. One day.

"Rosalind," she said, with a nod. "Seventeen. My experience with the supernatural has been--quite limited."

A pause, while she considered what she'd like to learn about.

"I'd like to learn about ghosts."

Because she was scared of them. Rosalind was not sharing that with the class.

"Calvin, eighteen, I've got tons of experience with the paranormal." He didn't. He barely had experience with the normal. "I'd like to learn more about hot vampire babes."

This was going to end well.

"My name is Nobody Owens but I go by Bod for short," he started, giving the teacher a brief nod. "I'm seventeen, I think, and I was actually raised in a graveyard by the ghosts that lived there after my parents were murdered. And when I say ghosts, I mean the spirits of those who were buried in the graveyard. I could see them. I know a witch and a Hound of God and my guardian is actually a vampire."

Bod figured that made his experience with the supernatural fairly extensive but it was mostly on the good side of things which made him lucky.

"I think I'd like to learn about those areas of the supernatural that aren't so...pleasant."

"Kate Gregson, seventeen." And keeping her tone mild on the next subject. "I kinda have a lot of experience with the supernatural by now. I've met ghosts, werewolves, and vampires. Some experiences have been good and some very much not."

She paused, lips twisting in thought, then shrugged. "I guess I just want to learn more."

"I'm Caroline Forbes," she said, more addressing the others in the class than Ric since, hi, he knew way too much about her already. "Mystic Falls isn't exactly New York, but we have our share of things that go bump in the night. I think class should focus on the good sorts of paranormal things. You know, nice werewolves!"

"I don't know a lot about the supernatural," Bobby said, looking a little worried. "And I don't know anything about fighting except that Jason said he would teach me a little, and one time I got in a fight at school, but it ended up really badly. So I guess I'd rather learn about talking to supernatural things?"

He stopped and then finally remembered. "Um, my name is Bobby McCallister. I'm 14."

"My name is Raven, and I am 17," Raven said. She squirmed a little before pressing on; it wasn't a secret anymore after all. "I am a demon, and as such am usually considered 'supernatural.' I wish to learn about other supernatural creatures so that I will better be able to deal with them." And not be so afraid in the case of vampires.

"My name is Helen Haras-Uquara and I am 18. I have quite a bit of experience with the paranormal." In fact, she supposed, some would consider her and her abilities paranormal.

"My name is Chloe S-Saunders," she said softly, not looking at anyone. "I'm a sophomore and almost 16." She swallowed. "Uhm, I know more than I would like to about some s-supernatural things and not enough about others." She paused for a moment. "Ghosts," she said finally. "I can s-see ghosts and communicate with them."

That was more than enough to reveal for now, right?

"I'm interested in learning more about other supernatural things."

You know, in case things came up that she could use to help her friends back home.

"My name is Maladicta," she said. Because there were people out there to whom that was a completely valid choice for naming their child. "Your years run faster than ours so let's just settle on older than the other students, shall we? I'd say I have a reasonable amount of experience in the area as I've been a vampire all my life."

A beat.

"Reformed."

When Kennedy spoke up, she looked like she was torn between being through the roof at getting to take a class in stuff that was actually useful and relevant to her interests, and being cranky because how come anybody who felt like doing this stuff in other worlds got to go and do it, and she wasn't supposed to? So not fair. God.

"Hey. Kennedy," she said with a casual wave, shrugging off the annoyance for now. "I'm seventeen, a senior, and I've been training to fight vampires and demons since I was six. There isn't so much a grey area about it in my world, 'cause there's a whole thing where our vampires have no souls, but around here it's different. I get that."

Since oh, look, two of her friends in this class just happened to be a vampire and a demon. Funny how that worked out; she shot a wry look Maladicta's way.

"So yeah. Kinda had some run-ins with vampires, demons, werewolves, a maenad, some creepy-ass guy made out of living Jell-O or something," she listed off, wondering how that list had gotten so long so fast. "And my girlfriend's a badass witch." She was allowed to be generous with the compliments there. Shut up.

"Claudia Donovan, sixteen. Before coming here I saw way more of, like, crazy science than supernatural stuff." And she still didn't entirely believe in magic. "I'd be interested in learning more about werewolves, I guess."

"Dana Scully, 15, and various weird experiences with people with paranormal abilities, alleged ghosts, alleged vampires, alleged aliens, and various hoaxes done by people looking to make money." Scully paused. "And then there are the things that happen in Fandom," she said more cautiously. "I'd like to learn anything about the djinn, or djinnayah, that's out there." In order to thwart one, yes.

"Ellie Bartowski, and I'm eighteen," Ellie said when it was her turn. "I've experienced quite a bit of the supernatural since I've been here for nearly two years. I know some magic users and aliens. I'm also aware there are other supernatural beings around."

She paused, taking a moment to think about what she wanted to learn about. "I think I'd like to learn more about ghosts. I haven't really experienced those, yet." At least none that she knew of.

Caroline so totally didn't think she'd be very good at fielding questions from this crowd, but she looked hot so maybe she'd just distract them away. Especially if vampires came up, thanks for that one, Ric.
