Teamwork 101 -- Period 1 [Class #1] [Monday]

Ah, teamwork.

Genesis lounged in the chair behind the teacher’s desk, looking more ready to sign autographs than to teach and the smile toying at his lips was hardly likely to reassure any of his students who knew him. Or, for that matter, his co-teacher.

Who was thrilled with him.

"Yo. Rookies." Reno was trying not to be too obvious about talking through clenched teeth, but with the way he was standing about two steps behind Genesis and occasionally directing death-glares to the back of his head, it was apparent that he was having problems. "Welcome to Teamwork 101, where even the teachers apparently gotta learn this junk as they go, yo."

Reno had not been planning on this.

Of course not, which was what made it so very entertaining. "As, presumably, most of you signed up of your own will," Genesis said dryly, "I’m going to assume that you are all aware that this is a class wherein nearly everything will be done with the aid of at least one other person."

Genesis smiled thinly. "Today, it’s introductions. You are all to pair up, find out enough about each other to introduce your partners and then do so. Reno?"

“This guy here is Genesis-with-a-weird-assed-last-name,” Reno replied, nodding towards the SOLDIER. "Passin’ not-bad with a sword. Obsessed with red leather and purple apples, yo. Quotes bad poetry."

Well. The exercise didn’t say that they had to be nice about it.

That it didn’t. Genesis looked amused. "And my introduction was courtesy of Reno, last name need not apply. He drinks too much, eats too little, and once upon a time, murdered, spied and kidnapped people. Got paid well for it, too."

They were clearly going to be besties.

Reno cleared his throat, sparing the back of Genesis’ head another dirty look, and then shrugged and shot the class a strained grin.

"And you wouldn’t believe the health benefit package for that, either. So! Get to it, yo. And if any of you are lookin’ to TA for us this semester,” you know, the well-paid murderer and the... other well-paid murderer, “swing by after class and we’ll see about it, yo."

And Genesis smirked. He was allowed as, after all, he’d gotten the chair.

Momoko blinked rapidly at him, then frowned.

"Fine! I just asked," she huffed slightly at him, taken aback by the response.

But at least he hadn't said it was because she was a girl or anything, so she couldn't really argue about it. "I know their weapons are important to people; I have my own, you know. I just like to learn as much as I can, so I can be better at what I do. That's why I even learned how to use a gun in the first place."

Because she was a girl? What would THAT have to do with whether or not she could handle a weapon?

Squall nodded at her. "That's a good idea," he told her. "It's always important to be able to fight without your primary weapon. You never know when you'll have to. Guns are highly effective, but they lack finesse."

He shrugged. "What weapon do you use?"

Look! An unprompted question! Maybe he was getting a little better at this conversation stuff.

"Ah! Mostly I use my yo-yo, but I've learned a lot since I got here!" Momoko grinned at the question and counted off on her fingers. "I practice with a gun every week; not always a pistol, although that's my best scores. Triela loans me one of hers. I'm totally good with a slingshot, and like I said, I've learned how to use a short sword! I don't practice anymore, so I'm not that good with one, but I know some! Uhm, if I can fly something, I can probably figure out the weapons and stuff. Hmmm."

She pouted at the small number of fingers raised on her hand. Was that it? It totally didn't sound like a lot, now that she said them aloud.

Squall nodded. "Interesting."

The idea of a yo-yo or slingshot as a deadly weapon didn't faze him at all -- it made perfect sense to him, in fact. "Would you like to spar sometime? I've never fought a yo-yo before."

...!!!!!!!!

"I've fought criminals, but I've never sparred someone with my yo-yo before! SURE!" She was totally too excited about the prospect to consider she still had NO idea what a gunblade really did or even looked like. "Although I fly when I use it, will that be unfair? I'm also pretty strong."

"It wouldn't be fair if you didn't use your full powers," Squall told her. "I've fought flying enemies before."

Which was totally a plus, since most of Momoko's experience with fighting people on the ground had been them attempting to shoot or swat her from the sky and her simply knocking them unconscious in return, or lassoing them as they ran away.

"Awesome!" She really shouldn't be this excited. If asked, it was totally a lingering side effect of the trip with Rikku. "You just tell me when and as long as I don't have classes or club, I am totally there! Ah!"

She held up her wrapped wrist. "It will have to wait a few days for this to heal, though. Will that be a problem? It should be okay by next week! Really!"

Well, to be fair, most of the "flying" monsters Squall was used to fighting just hovered about five feet off the ground. Actual flying would throw him off a little.

"Whatever," he told her.

He shrugged, dug a Potion out of his pocket, and tossed it in her direction. "Drink that and it'll heal quicker."

Momoko caught the bottle out of instinct. "Ah! A potion!"

Like she hadn't seen a ton of those this past week?

"Thank you! You're not from Spira, right?" Was her world the only one without these handy things? She pocketed it, not about to take one from a stranger, even if he did seem really nice; she'd ask Reno or Rikku later, first.

"From where?" Squall asked. "No, I'm not. What's-his-name" -- Squall gestured at Reno -- "and I went through that last year. Totally different worlds."

Momoko looked over briefly at Reno, confused, then shook her head. "Ah! No, no! Reno's not from Spira. He's from... uhm, Uh. Oh, I can't remember the name of his world, but it's not Spira. Spira is where Rikku's from! I just came back from a visit there and her world uses potions, too, so I wondered. But I've never heard her mention seeds or lamb gardens, so you're probably right."
