Ethics [December 16, 2nd period]

"Unlike some of the other teachers here, I still expect you to complete a final examination this week," Anakin said as he shut the door and began passing out paperwork. "I will provide you with a series of scenarios. You write down which option you would pick, and why. Since this is Ethics, there are no black and white absolutely correct answers to anything. What matters to me is that you have some sort of reason for your choice. If your logic is faulty or snide or clearly half-assed, that's when I will become...unhappy."

And when he was unhappy, final grades reflected it. He'd come a long way--he used to kill people when he was unhappy...

D) Call the appropriate authorities, insist upon a full investigation, follow up on leads, and if there is no body, do not allow her to be declared dead.

If she is found dead, I will take all those responsible into custody, call CNN, and ensure that those who gave any orders are subjected to the greatest extent of the law.

....assuming they are not stupid enough to taunt me when I have a gun.

a) I can always get a new outfit.

Some of these questions were making Scully blink.

C) Torture is not only illegal and immoral but ineffective with the insane. The official is welcome to file a complaint, at which point he will be given a scathing commentary on how stupid and incompetent he is.

While any deaths that would occur would be a tragedy, the farther-reaching implications of torture would impact on our troops in enemy territories, our credibility in the international community, and our ability to get any other useful information out of the bomber at a future time. There is a reason it is against policy, totally aside from ethical considerations.

Also, it is entirely possible to evacuate a 600-person-occupied 50-story high-rise within 4.7 minutes, given a working fire alarm and a bullhorn, despite Astrolite bombs hidden in a vending machine.

(Or so I've heard.)

Scully stared at this one with an impassive face, even as she wanted to stab the test with her pen.

C) Mind games from torturers are not a cause for misplaced guilt.

As a responsible parent, all I can ask is to be killed instead, and trust my children to look out for each other.

After a moment, Jason decided he could afford to be truthful on at least one question and not fail, and circled C.

D. My mother is already dead, but if she weren't...I would look for her, and I would definitely find her, no matter how much it takes. But I wouldn't torch any village.

She took a moment to consider before adding.

Alright, so I might torch it a little, but I wouldn't kill anyone. That would be like becoming one of the people that took her.

A. I know the suit won't mind. How do I know? well, perhaps because it's not alive?

She wondered if someone would answer anything but A.

She was just going to stare in disbelief, first trying to answer if she considered not using her magic. But when she came with nothing but keep on searching, she decided to move along.

D. I can magically force someone to tell the truth.

C. None of the above. I have no idea of what to do. Panic and let them decide perhaps? Or try to make them chose me to die.

While panicking all the way, of course.

"I think it was. And I really should have seen it coming," Jaina grumbled. "Though don't get me wrong, I'm happy to get time with him. even if he got my internal argument over whether or not to stick around going again."

Not a very difficult question to start off with, was it?

c) My mother died shortly after I was born. If I had HAD a mother, and she was taken from me, there wouldn't be any force on the planet that could stop me from getting her back or taking revenge.

Re: Scenario #1

[identity profile] anarchist-queen.livejournal.com 2010-12-17 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
D, none of the above. Or rather, a modification of C. I'd go after her because at the very least I'd want to be able to give her a decent funeral. But I wouldn't torch the entire village she was in. Just the home of those responsible.

[identity profile] whateverknight.livejournal.com 2010-12-17 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
a) Sure, there's no actual obligation, but it has to be done by someone, and it might as well be me.

Re: Scenario #2

[identity profile] anarchist-queen.livejournal.com 2010-12-17 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
A. Besides the fact that it's the right thing to do, there is no danger to myself, and fuck the clothes. If anyone asks, I get to say they got messed up saving a kid from drowning.

[identity profile] anarchist-queen.livejournal.com 2010-12-17 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
After hopefully not a fatal amount of woolgathering, probably A. But I wouldn't really be worried about the legality of it by that point. I'd probably have problems morally, but in the end I'd be saving lives.

Jason didn't even have to think about it to circle A. Sometimes, extreme measures needed to be taken for the greater good.

b) If the person in charge has ordered torture, I'll follow orders. I'll do whatever's necessary to retrieve the information. I will also take it upon myself to do the actual torturing, so that no one else has it on their conscience.
