"There was a hedge in my way," the Doctor explained. "That's why I wasn't here. I understand there were hedges in your way too and yours and so on. I don't like hedges." That was all there was to say about that. "Don't think this gets you out of your final. I hope you all remembered to wear sensible shoes. You won't be running today, but it's important to get into good habits if you're going to be dealing with this planet on a regular basis. Lots of running usually. Shoes should be sensible." It was reasonable to assume that the Doctor was a bit 'off' today. "You, you aaaaand you," he said, pointing to three students, "stay here and answer your final question. It's a one on one verbal exam. The rest of you go play in the amusement park. Stay away from the hot dogs. I didn't program them quite right." They would taste like pungent cheese. "Make sure you wander back out here before the hour is up to answer your question."

He opened the doors to reveal an amusement park with a Ferris wheel, dodgems, roller coaster and assorted other rides, games and holographic food stands.

"Everything feels pain."

"Mummies don't. They don't have internal organs. They're embalmed so their nerves don't function any more. They're incapable of feeling pain. The only thing that has them actually moving around and functioning is also incapable of feeling pain since they don't have nerves either."

"What do you want me me to say then?" Cara snapped.

"Why do you care what I want?"

"Because apparently none of my answers are satisfying you."

"None of your answers are solving the problem. They're all perfectly valid, if violent, responses to the situation, but they're not working. Are you going to snap at me about that or keep trying until something does work?"

"Of course I'd keep trying!" Cara was stubborn like that. "I just don't know how I'm supposed to kill it."

"Who says you have to kill it?"

"You said to stop it, and that's what people usually mean."

"Do I look like people?"

"Very tall people."

"This from the girl in heels."

"My boots are perfectly suitable footwear."

Just very high.

"They make you tall. And I'm not people. I asked you to stop the mummy. That doesn't mean kill it. You've been my TA long enough to know that, and I know you're not stupid, so stop pretending and stop the mummy."

They made all Mord'Sith tall, and it wasn't Cara's fault she was short for a D'Haran, or that half the people here were even shorter.

"I don't know! I was a chipmunk during that class!"

"I know, that's why I asked you about this topic, so you couldn't give a glib answer or spout my own words back at me. I don't know if you noticed, but the class wasn't exactly about the finer details of scientific topics. It was about using science as a theme to experience this planet and start getting those small human brains of yours working on ways to survive since, and I say this from personal experience, the planet seems to be out to kill you all."

"I already know how to survive." Usually through use of what the Doctor would probably consider excessive violence.

"Then survive being chased by a mummy that you can't kill or inflict pain on."

"Run," Cara said, she wasn't a coward, but she wasn't stupid either. "And keep on running until it stopped."

"Can you even run properly in those shoes?"

"Yes." Cara did not know why he was so obsessed with her boots. "And fight in them."

And she hadn't fallen over once.

"You do know that they defy modern engineering."

"Mord'Sith have worn these boots for centuries."

"Go and ride the roller coaster. It's that one." He pointed it out. "I think you'll find it a worthwhile experience."
