Not-So-Apathy Club, In a Very Nice Classroom, This Can't End Well, Friday Afternoon

This Apathy Club looked a little deserted, Rinoa thought as she arrived. And not all that enthusiastic. Okay, it was Apathy Club, but wasn't that the whole point of the club? To try their best to shake off that apathy and learn sunnier, better ways of coping with themselves?

Yeah. Someone didn't get Apathy Club.

No one else seemed to be definitively in charge -- possibly because their reluctant leader was off taking souls -- and so Rinoa, being Rinoa, took it upon herself to get the ball rolling.

"Hi, everyone!" Rinoa said brightly, standing up to greet the room. "My name's Rinoa Heartilly. I'm not a member, but I thought it might be nice to drop in. Squall said it was okay."

Technically, Squall had failed to stop her from coming. There was a very important difference, there.

"I can't wait to see what's going to happen! So ... who usually gets things started?" Rinoa asked, clapping her hands in front of herself. "I have some really great ideas for things we should talk about! Who wants to go first?"

The room did not seem exactly to be leaping up to join her awesome ideas, here.

"Okay," she said, finally, putting her hands on her hips. "I'll go first. But that means someone else has to go second. And then maybe we could play a game!"

Rinoa might not leave the room alive.

(await the unholy OCD! ... I have kind of wanted to do this ever since I started the club, yes.)

To Rinoa, he grumbled, "...you're missing the point."

"No one else seems to be doing anything," Rinoa pointed out. "Isn't this more fun than staring at the walls?"

"Okay," Rinoa said. "So you're all here because you struggle with apathy. It's okay! I have down days, too. Everybody does! But there are lots of good coping strategies for when you can't shake those blues."

She began ticking items off on her fingers. "You can talk to a friend, or go for a walk in the crisp air. Play a game, write a letter, watch TV! The possibilities are endless!"

Don't ask her to list all of them. She might just try.

"So everyone here should list their favorite thing to do. Something they love! Something they absolutely can't be apathetic about. For me, it's playing with my dog, Angelo. Anyone else here have pets? Aren't they awesome??"

She pointed at someone at random. "You," she said. "Your favorite thing to do. What is it?"

"Work," Rosalind said, keeping it short and simple and just knowing that Rinoa was going to take issue with that.

Amazingly, Rinoa wasn't going to contest that point. 'Work' was a much better answer than 'I dunno' or 'nothing' or even a wordless shrug, which -- considering Squall -- was what she had expected.

"Great," she said. "Work can give you positive self-esteem and make you feel useful and competent. Those are all good things. And it requires you being pro-active, right? Not just waiting for life to come to you!"

He'd wanted to keep it short and simple, too. But there was not a single-syllable word for playing music. Therefore, he'd expended entirely too much effort in his reply, and now he was going to cross his arms over his chest and glower at the ceiling.

He had displayed his weakness. Try to resist discussing music, Jono! Muahahahaha.

"I don't like doing things," Squall told her flatly.

Because he couldn't very well tell the truth, which was that his favorite thing to do was to have Rinoa drag him into doing something he hated. He barely admitted that to himself, after all.

Alternately, this might be a good place to threaten Squall with bodily harm for allowing this to happen.

"Okay, I don't want to hog all of the club with my topic," Rinoa said, some time later. "Let's just talk about anything! Are people excited about the holidays? Can you believe all that sugar-snow we had yesterday? How are everyone's classes going? Let's talk about anything you want to talk about!"

Sadly, 'being quietly apathetic and loathing you' were not suggested as conversational topics.

Squall sat down and stared at the floor. Hopefully, this would all be over soon and they could all just forget about it.

Strangely, getting up and actually leaving didn't even occur to him. He was just going to ride this one out.
