"Hey, everyone," Ben said, blushing faintly and trying to hide under his Santa hat. "Sorry I missed the last few weeks. I, um, was a cat. With the Earth holidays coming up, a lot of students will be heading home for a few weeks, and I know that's not possible for some of you. Is there anything we can do as a group to make your time in the dorms a little less lonesome?"

Any suggestions for making time in the dorms less sad?

"Elphaba and I were talking about some kind of Fandom holiday party," Karla said. "Not just a Christmas party at Fandom, but a kind of...blending of a bunch of midwinter holiday traditions? With a few uniquely Fandom elements thrown in for good measure? So it's a Fandom party, not a holiday-we're-stuck-spending-at-Fandom party."

Ben nodded, smiling. "Especially since Christmas is such a weird holiday."

Karla nodded emphatically. "It is. I was telling Rinoa about it a few days ago. The wandering star, Frankenstein, Jesus-Santa. This world's myths are weird."

Unlike her world with myths about dragons and giant spiders and stuff. Those were normal.

"...Frankenstein?" Ben repeated. "Ender didn't mention that part."

"There were three wise men," Karla explained. "The brought gold, Frankenstein, and myrrh. The gold and the Frankenstein I understand, but what baby needs myrrh?"

"What baby needs Frankenstein?" Ben countered.

"A baby whose parents thought it was a good idea to give birth in a stable," Karla retorted. "Clearly he needed someone to take care of him and hold all the gold."

Seriously. A stable?!?

"Wouldn't a droid be better for that? Or someone without bolts in his neck?"

Thank you, Jono, for Ben's knowledge of horror movies.

...and yes, droids had bolts in their necks too. Don't expect for some kind of reasonable argument from Ben.

"Please, Ben," Karla said, rolling her eyes. "Like a few extraneous bolts are going to impede Frankenstein's ability to take care of a baby. He's not going to nurse the child."

Not that she knew he had bolts in the first place. Interesting. Maybe there was some kind of bolt-electricity-star connection?

"Well, I'd certainly hope not, unless he'd been built with parts they didn't show in the movies," Ben replied, making a face.

"The movies always leave things out," Karla said. "It's possible!"

And wouldn't that be a weird spin on an already bizarre tale?

"But think about it. Why else would the king offer a baby silver and gold like in the song if there wasn't a big old Frankenstein glowering at him next to the shepherd?"

"Maybe Joseph knew kung-fu?" Ben offered.

"Why didn't he use it to get Mary a room so she didn't have to give birth in a stable?" Karla demanded.

Duh, Ben! Duh!

"Maybe he's only allowed to use it in defense," Ben said after a moment's consideration.

"How is he then defending himself into making the king give him bags of money?" Karla asked.

Clearly, the Frankenstein made more sense.

"Well, the kid's a baby god," Ben said. "Maybe they're getting their bribes in early."

"Oh, totally," Karla said with a nod. "But a hulking bolty servant will be much better at convincing people to give up the goods than some skinny guy who says, 'I know kung-fu but can only use it in defense.' Come on. Frankenstein is the obvious go-to guy for this. That's probably what the three Wise Males had in mind when they gave him to him."

Ben looked thoughtful. "True," he said finally. "This planet is weird."

Karla threw her hands up in the air. "I know!" she said. "I just don't get it, sometimes. Why make a holiday about monsters blackmailing kings, I ask you?"

"No idea," Ben replied, "but at least there are gifts?"

"Of course there are," Karla muttered darkly. "Look at the origins."

She was still talking more about Frankenstein and the king more than the three Wise Males.

"Happy Diety Blackmail Day!" Ben said.

"Hugs and expensive gifts all around!" Karla declared. "You know, I don't think there's anything we could add that would make this holiday any weirder."

You know, apart from everything else they'd added already. Kung-fu action Joseph!

"The powered sugar snow was pretty weird," Ben offered.

"No, it was tasty," Karla corrected. "And come on. That's just Fandom being Fandom. Remember the syrup? And the glitter? And the chocolate?"

"I'm still waiting for ice cream," Ben said with a laugh.

"We'd never get you inside," Karla said with a mournful sigh. "First because you'd refuse to budge and then because you wouldn't fit."

Ben stuck his tongue out at her. "Be nice."
