Languages, 10/26

To his Classics students, Dream delivers a lecture on Koine Greek. After he is done, he puts forward a question for discussion: What were the benefits of Koine as an international language? Are international languages still valuable?

For his Languages of Asia students, he passes out calligraphy paper, pens, and a primer on Chinese writing. Work on understanding why Chinese is written as it is written, and on copying the characters showin in the handout. Next week, you will move into writing with understanding.

Again, there are no classes on Friday. I will see you all on Monday.

Janet's grin becomes positively smug before she begins to look like the picture of innocence.

Jack writes something on a piece of paper, balls it up, and then throws it at her.

You did this, didn't you?

Janet opens up the note, reads it, and stifles a giggle.

Did what? Sell you out to the radio? I'm evil, but I'm not that evil

The note is aimed directly at his nose on the way back.

Because of the immense lack of height in his fellow student rather then the paper hitting his nose the balled up note bounced off his forehead, off of his hands, off of his desk and onto the ground. Lucky for both of them he managed to stomp on the ball before it could get any further away. After leaning down to "tie his shoe" he picked up the note.

Liar. Know who did it?

The note is aimed for her head but may not have been thrown high enough to suceed.

Janet manages not to laugh as the note falls on her desk and rolls into her lap, but it's difficult.

I would never lie to you, Jack. Maybe I do, and maybe I don't. What's my incentive?

This time she tries to be unobtrusive and slides the note along the floor to him as she reaches down to get an extra pen out of her backpack.

Jack reaches down to pick up the note and is very proud that he didn't fall over.

Uh-huh, sure. I'll tell you what Daniel's wearing for Halloween.

He palms the ball and stretches wide, dropping the note down the back of her shirt.

It takes Jack all of four seconds to realize that denying the note would be a bad idea.

"Not boring at all sir, sorry sir."

"Oops," says Janet, looking sheepish and slightly amused. "Sorry."

She makes a mental note to write the next one to Jack in Greek for practice.

Janet sighs, turns regretfully to Jack, and starts discussing Koine Greek and international languages.

Jack, knowing nothing of Greek much less Koine Greek nods his head a lot and pretends he understands anything Doc is saying.

Janet is completely not fooled, but throws Jack a few hints on things he might be able to talk about while pointing to the appropriate spots on the handout.

Actually listening to Daniel when he's talking helps remarkably with understanding this class.

Jack silently thanks Doc for the help.

"Greek would be a lot easier if it were in English."

Janet smiles much more nicely at him, then snickers.

"And yet the class isn't about English, is it, sir?"

"Liz just signed up for Western Lit," says Janet, after making another decent point on international languages and studying the sheet for more information on Koine Greek to talk about. "You could too."

"But isn't Western Lit the one with all those big boring books and stuff? Like Two Cities and all that crap?"

Janet hopes Professor Dream isn't staring at them and starts pointing at the sheet again, scribbling out the Greek alphabet at the top of the sheet for practice.

Jack attempts to dechiper the language at the top and wonders why the hell he even chose this class to begin with.

The Greek letters Janet is writing might, in fact, spell out "Where are you two going?"

If Jack could understand her handwriting he might answer that he doesn't know yet. But since he only recognizes "Where" and "two" he's somewhat lost.

Janet notices Jack's frustration and sighs a little, then scribbles, "Where are you two going?" in really tiny letters above it. She also makes another comment about the use of Koine Greek in its native setting.

Jack reads the mini-note and get's it. In equally tiny letters next to it he writes: "? Food."
