Introduction to Personal Weaponry [Monday, second period]

"Today we're talking about the last of the four major category of ranged weapon," Max announced even though he figured most of his students had already figured that part out from the assortment of weird ray guns and things he had out today. "Some of these use alternative forms of energy to fire standard projectiles like bullets and things, but you can treat those essentially like modern guns, only faster and more powerful."

"The interesting ones are these." Max held up a phaser. "This is called a phaser. It fires energy directly in a beam rather than using energy to push or throw some sort of physical projectile. One of the reasons it makes for such a good weapon is that once you've solved the problems of projecting energy directly you can do a lot with it. A phaser can be used to kill or stun opponents depending on the needs of the situation. It can also be used as a cutting or a welding tool."

"Many weapons of this type are multi-purpose like this," Max continued, putting down the phaser and picking up a blaster pistol. "This tends to be true no matter what technological path lead to the development of the weapon. There are exceptions, of course, but they tend to be relatively rare."

"However, despite the many advantages to this type of energy-projectile weapon, there are some disadvantages as well. One of the big ones is visibility. While a bullet is small and moving fast enough that it's difficult to see, a lot of energy weapon fire is highly visible. If you're trying to shoot someone from cover and don't want them to know where you are... well, some of these are very bad choices since all anyone has to do to find you is trace the path of your shot back to your position."

"By this point I figure most of you understand how guns work as guns, so while there are the usual targets this week, there are a lot of other things to play around with." Big metal plates, random locked doors, and just about anything else that might be interesting to try one of the weapons on were scattered around the room. "So today's activity involves finding a couple of these weapons and seeing if you can get familiar with their less combat-oriented uses. Start fires, break into things, perhaps try making something. Feel free to experiment."

Oh, dear. More modern technology and guns, things Alexander was completely positive he would never use at home, but the experience would be good, considering he wouldn't have it otherwise.

Today's lesson sounded really cool to Jason, and considering the toys he usually got to play with, that was saying something.

Bruce took notes. And that was it for the day since those were absolutely still guns.

Kurt paid attention, but not too much. He was already well-acquainted with the many uses of energy weapons, considering there was a friend of his back home that had some attached to his face.
