Independent Study Meeting

*over the loudspeaker* Attention, please? The Independent Study group will be meeting outside Locker 327 after classes end. We will not be playing Texas Hold 'Em. Thank you.

Zero sits in the hallway outside Locker 327, wearing a climbing safety harness with which she absconded from the gym. Around her is a lot of scientific equipment of dubious origin, and in her hands is her video camera, finally dug from her suitcase. She is speaking to it.

In the event I should not return, I leave Fish to my sister Arsenal, my guitar to my brother Rat, and my record collection to my brother Twitch. To Janet, I leave my croquet mallet, may she make good use of it. And to Parker, I leave my sense of humor the stone gremlin on my desk.

Janet shows up to the Independent Study meeting and looks very, very curious. "Hey," she says. "What's the plan this time?"

I'm goin' in.

Janet's eyes widen. "Wow," she says. "Seems kind of risky. Aren't there students that haven't come out yet?" She leans over and peers at the hand of cards the locker dealt out. "On the other hand, maybe you'll end up in Las Vegas and have a marvelous time."

I don' know. If they've gone in an' not come out, no one knows about it yet. But anyway, that's what this is for. *tugs at the rope attached to her harness.

Vegas...a vacation would be nice.

*pops the tape out of her camera and puts a fresh one in* Okay, this is my will. Just in case. *holds it out to Janet*

"Good luck, then," says Janet. "If you go to Vegas, bring me back a souvenir?" She takes the will from Zero. "If you're sure about this..." She glances doubtfully into the locker. "You already sent a camera through on a rope first or something, right?"

Squall, no, I only have the one camera!

So far it hasn' sent anyone anywhere superdangerous. That we know of.

After leaving study hall, Angela joins the group in the hall. "You're going into the locker? For real?"

She wonders if poor judgement is entirely endemic in the school.

Okay, here goes.

*With a running start, Zero leaps into Locker 327. For several seconds, nothing happens.

Then the safety rope Rory is holding goes slack.*

"Aw...crap," Rory says, pulling the rope out of the locker. "Zero? Zero!"

She turns to the rest of the group. "Guys? Um."

Nope, no Zero.

"...oh. my. god."

She grabs Rory's arm. "We lost Zero?"

"She'll be back," Rory says grimly, staring at the locker. "I mean - it always spits them back out, right?"

"Yeah, but ... she might be in hell. Or Alaska. Or Hell, Alaska," Angela says, grimly. "And she might come back with, like, a sincere interest in accounting."

She sets down the spectrometer. "But I don't want to go in after her, do you?"

Rory shakes her head. "No, not particularly. But...it's Zero. She can take care of herself. I'm not too worried. Plus, didn't she have a camera or something?"

"Zero? Accounting?" Janet ignores the locker, which has just spit out a really good hand this time--an ace and a queen. "I'm not going in after her. Then again, I don't think she expected us to." She holds up the tape. "I say we give it a good, long time before we listen to this."

"Plotting zoo joke," Angela explains. "She, like, was really excited by everything, and she decided she HAD to quit being a punk, and accountant was one of her career choices. Then it was marketing. Then law. Then she was going to start a religion worshipping Google."
