Ethics [Thursday, October 28]

"Today we talk about wrath," he said. "There's something very human about giving in to our temper," he said, then paused. "At least at that moment. The repercussions are always waiting."

He waved a hand and the holoprojector flipped to life, showing the blue alien from last week . "As a Padawan who wasn't prone to following the instructions of my master," his eyes met each student who had also made that choice as he spoke, "I was captured aboard Krayn's ship, enslaved--again--and set to work in his spice refining plants underground on Nar Shaddaa. My master escaped, and I didn't see him for almost a month. The intervening time was not pleasant."

He looked around the classroom making eye contact with every student before continuing. "I was angry and alone, and at a time like that wrath is very, very tempting. It urges you to listen to that dark little voice inside of you--to cut loose, live without consequences."

He pointed at the holo again. "There are always consequences. At the end of this story, I faced Krayn in combat, ignored the advice of my master again," which was a theme in Anakin's stories, "and stabbed Krayn through the chest with my lightsaber. I was thirteen. That decision shaped much of my training as a Jedi from then on."

Anakin stopped pacing. "What would it take for you to get to that hazy edge? And more importantly, how do you stop yourself from giving in?"

Medusa didn't get why it was so bad to lose your temper once in a while. She wasn't Blackagar. Everyone wasn't likely to die if she did. And throwing breakables and terrorizing everyone with her hair could be so satisfying sometimes.

Since Scully's idea of losing her temper was an exasperated lecture -- after something like someone risking their life -- or just aiming a gun and waiting for back-up if someone was shooting at her, even if they killed her sister....

Yeah, she had nothing.

"I would suppose," Scully said slowly, as if this had never already happened multiple times, "I would be upset if someone threatened a friend. And didn't back down." She paused. And every time she'd shot someone in the line of duty while they were threatening civilians or other officers (three times), she was still convinced that it was the right thing to do, and she'd been in control of her reactions at the time.

"Possibly threatening a family member?" she tried. "I'm sorry, sir, I'm just not a very emotional person."

He did not lose his temper often, but rage? James mentally shrugged. It had uses.

"Threatening one of those I hold dear," he said simply. He did shrug this time. "Why would I not give in?"

Rosalind frowned thoughtfully as she listened. It was an--enlightening story.

"A threat to my family," Rosalind said, eyes cool. "But even then, not everyone loses their mind with anger."

She was--quite good at making decisions that seemed insane and worked out for the best. Except, by Elena's telling, the very last one.

Rosalind could handle that.

"I'm a little confused," Elphaba said. "While I won't say that killing is ever the true answer, the example seems more than a little ambiguous. The consequence in this case was ridding a world of a terrible person."

When Anakin started talking about wrath, Jason's mind went straight for one specific event. "If someone hurt one of my friends, or someone in my family, I'd probably lose it," he said, thinking of how he'd almost killed Two-Face after finding out he'd killed his dad. "I...didn't exactly stop myself the last time that happened, and nearly got my ass handed to me because I wasn't thinking straight enough to defend myself. I guess I'd try to remember that night, and get my revenge when I was more clear-headed."

That...might not have been what Anakin was going for, but at least Jason was honest?
