"Hey, everyone," Ben said, smiling around the room. "We'll keep this short because the Homecoming Fair has really astral free food and my grandfather in a dunk tank, and so isn't to be missed."

He crossed his legs out in front of him. "I guess the question I want to ask today is what brought you all here to this group? I'm not really one for wallowing in the past if I can avoid it, but I've been in Fandom long enough to realize that I'm not the only person without certain family members, you know?" He smiled. "And there are certainly more people who've lost people than are in this group, so what drew you here?"

He tried to meet each person's eyes individually. "If you want to talk about it. I'm not going to push. We can also just sit around and drink coffee and eat ice cream."

Elphaba shook her head. There was one thing, but she didn't want to say it in front of the group. "There's not much anyone can remember from being so young," she said.

Karla might have disagreed, but she had the feeling she'd pushed too much already. "I was nine when my parents were--when they died," she said. "So, I'm lucky in that I have memories of them. I'd say not as many as I'd like--my mother was the Territory Queen and my father her Consort, so they were often busy--but I don't think it matters how old you are or how many memories you have when they go. It's never enough."

And there was the whole part where her father kind of hated Elphaba, too.

"It isn't," Elphaba said. "As I have told Raven, I only have one thing that was my mother's, and there is nothing in all of Oz or even this world that is as precious to me."

Karla nodded. "I have a little bit of the perfume she used to wear. It's outrageously expensive; my father used to get a tiny vial of it for their anniversary. I don't even wear it, it's too precious. But sometimes I just uncork it a little and smell it and it's like she'd near."

Karla nodded. "I don't actually know what happened to most of their belongings," she said quietly. "I was sent away to apprentice with the Hourglass just a few months later. So I'm glad to have this."
