William had been surprrised- but pleased- to find a ~~handwaved~~ message from the librarian asking if he was still interested in a position of an aide. Which, really- spend the whole day surrounded by books? Of course William was all for that!

As it was his first day, today William could be found behind the desk, familiarising himself with the tasks required for the job.

Around all day, minus a possible couple of hours for errandy things. Man, it's been forever since I've done a library post.

"Good morning," Henry said, when he finally made it to work. (It had been a rather distracting few days.) "Can I make the wild guess that you'd be William? I'm Henry DeTamble."

"I am indeed," William nodded. "I hope coming in and setting up on my own on my first day wasn't too presumptous of me, Mr. DeTamble." He'd briefly toyed with the idea of waiting for the librarian to show up before actually opening the library, but, well. Patience was the virtue he had the most amount of trouble with, honestly.

"It doesn't look like you made a bonfire out of the books, so we'll call it good," Henry said, with a smile that showed how not-very-bothered he was. "Sorry I was late. Usually I try to get to work before first period. Are you finding everything okay?"

William managed to look briefly horrified by the notion of burning books, before realising it was a joke. "Oh, yes," he nodded. "I wasn't entirely unfamiliar with the library itself before today, of course, but then there is something of a difference between being a patron and being an aide, so I've been reading up on what's expected of me."

"Mostly, it's about keeping things organized and taking care of anybody who comes in," Henry said. "It's usually fairly quiet. I try to get people to stay out of Special Collections, but there have been employees who went back there and were fine."

Yeah, asking William to stay out of someplace where he could learn things was... probably not going to be successful. "A student needs permission from a teacher to venture back there, correct?" he checked.

Rilla was heading into the library to work on her list of books for Faramir when she recognized the boy behind the desk. "William!" she said, beaming.

"Miss- Rilla," he replied, stumbling slightly over the greeting. "What brings you to the library today?"

"Right," Henry nodded, in a tone of voice that suggested he suspected he was waiting for the other shoe to drop. "It's not a place to play with."

"I've been working on book suggestions for Lord Faramir," she replied promptly. "English is not his first language and I'm trying to give him books I feel he will enjoy that won't be too dry or full of overly long words."

"Fiction or non?" he asked. "My area of expertise lies rather more in the realm of non-fiction, but I can certainly help you track down anything if you've already got some ideas."

"I mostly read novels," Rilla admitted with a slight blush, "so maybe we could work together to give him a little bit of everything?"

"Of course not," William nodded agreeably enough. "But all the same, I ought to haev some experience with it, should I be called upon to assist a fellow student." He didn't neccessarily want to venture in there right now, but perhaps once he'd thought of a suitable topic to research...

"There's nothing wrong with reading novels," William said quickly. "Really, I mostly take issue with the idea that the act itself is not an enjoyable activity. Why, so long as one is reading..." he trailed off, realising he was about to go off on a tangent.

Hopefully he wouldn't find out about the existence of the Dusk series too soon, or he might revise his opinion about all books being equally valid.

She beamed at him. "Exactly. Many of my favourite memories are of my family sitting around a fire and reading aloud."

William... was fairly sure his father wouldn't know what to do with a book if one were placed in front of him. "So, let's see this list you have so far, then?"

Rilla's list, written in a neat hand, trended heavily towards romantic poetry and Arthurian legend, with a smattering of Grimm's Fairy Tales.

"What else should I add?" she asked.

"Is Faramir from... this world?" William asked. The words still felt a bit odd on his tongue, even after nearly two months.

Henry put his hands in his pockets and rocked back on his heels in thought. "Come up with something you want to look for back there, and I'll walk you back next week or the week after," he proposed.

He'd just kind of hope the place wasn't in a hungry mood. Maybe make a few cake sacrifices. Anemone always said it liked cake.

Rilla shook her head. "His world has elves in it!"

"I shall!" William beamed at the librarian. "Thank you, sir." Not that he'd have snuck in without permission. No, he just would've gotten Mr. Holmes to write him a note for that purpose.

"Elves?" William echoed. "Truly? As in the creatures from stories that... make shoes and the like?"

"I asked, and he said he wasn't altogether certain of their workaday habits, though they were accounted great craftsmen," Rilla replied. "I asked him about Santa."

Henry waved vaguely. "Anytime," he said. "Is there anything else about the library I can show you to help you settle in? Coffee pot is in the staff kitchen."

Because lord knew that had been what he wanted to know his first day.

"...Coffee?" William repeated a bit blankly. It hadn't yet caught on outside of certain circles in Canada, none of which a fifteen-year-old orphan belonged to.

"Beverage of the gods?" Henry said, with some alarm. "The only way I make it through the morning?"

He tapped his fingers on the desk. "I can show you how the machine works," he offered.

"I manage quite well with tea- machine?" yeah, figures that that would be what caught William's attention.

"You didn't!" William gave her a delighted grin. "And what did he have to say?"

Henry blinked. It seemed a pretty small thing to get excited about, but if it floated William's boat...

"Let me show you," he said, and lead William back to the small break room. Where, in fact, a perfectly ordinary eight-cup coffee maker sat on the counter. "You put the coffee in here..." He explained, going through the process slowly.

"He didn't recognize the story, and then we got a little distracted as I explained the North Pole," Rilla replied.
