Boom-De-Yada Science - Danger Shop, Wednesday, Period 1 [Week 6]

The Doctor made everyone wait outside of the Danger Shop today.

"Let's start with the homework. I hope you didn't think I'd forgotten. I'm the Doctor, I never forget anything. Okay, I forget some things. After all, I'm not an elephant. You were supposed to live this week like it was Shark Week. How did you do?"

When that was done, he got on with the subject at hand. "An ocean, for those of you who come from less water-plenty planets, is what covers 71% of the Earth's surface. It's the big watery bits. More accurately, it's the big salty, watery bits. There's really only one ocean, but the humans of this and previous eras split it up into a few for geographic and organisational reasons. How many do we have now? Seven? Five? They'll be split into twelve at some point, but not any time soon. There are hundreds of thousands of types of life in the oceans despite humanity's best efforts to kill lots and lots of things that swim around. And contrary to any major corporations' attempts to convince you otherwise, oil does not belong in large bodies of water. Neither do waste products, pool noodles or dolphins, but try telling them that. They never listen.

But I suppose you want to see what's inside." He patted the Danger Shop door. "I've programmed the Danger Shop to simulate the ocean floor of the Great Barrier Reef. I would've chosen the Mariana Trench, but it's dark down there and there are things living down there that you don't really want to meet. So the reef it is. You can walk or swim but you won't need to worry about water pressure or breathing. It's only a water simulation, but you'll feel like you're breathing air normally and you'll be able to talk and hear each other as if you were on the surface. You probably can't always do something so fancy with a holographic set up like this, but I'm very good at this sort of thing."

He was a show-off, that's what. The Doctor stepped aside, opened the doors and let them go in to an underwater reef with turtles, coral, fish, assorted other sea life and, oh yes, probably a shark or two who'll probably leave you alone unless provoked. You were going to get soaking wet, which the Doctor forgot to mention, but it was only holographic water so it would be gone by the time you left the room.

Once she stopped being distracted by their surrounds, Cara was going to appreciate the wet leathers, really she was.

See, if he hadn't gotten to explore a star destroyer yesterday, Bobby would have been crazy excited about the coolness of this class.

He was still excited, but it wasn't a star destroyer. He wandered around the area, sometimes swimming, sometimes walking on the ocean floor, and tried to count the number of different species he could spot.

Dork.

"Hey, we're taking a class with a school of fish," Peter announced.

And instantly regretted it. "Okay, that was a bad one. Sorry about that."

It was a peculiar thing to be able to wander around underwater and Hinata was amusing herself by counting how many fish there were.

Keeping track of that was all but impossible and she was laughing softly as her count got ruined for the fifth time.

Being under water like this was awe inspiring, even if it was holographic. Lindsay was fascinated by all the sea life around her.

After making eye contact with some sharks to see if there was going to be a problem between him and them (he still couldn't explain that reaction to sharks), he started to swim around the reef to inspect it closely.

Raven was walking, since she still didn't know how to swim. The way she was delighted and Disney-princessing about the life around her, though, may have made Ariel claim gimmick infringement.

Christian didn't swim especially well, so he was excited to have the chance to see all of the sea life up close without having to worry about drowning. He gently ran his fingertips over an anemone.

The last time Diana has been near the Great Barrier Reef there had very nearly been a flood in France. It was a bit of a long story. She was enjoying this trip much more.

Zatanna had been wondering if she would manage not to go all woaaaah every time she had this particular class. So far she was failing, but that actually was a good thing; you don't get such a view every day after all. The fact her clothes were all wet registered a second later though. "Ah, ew", said as she tried to get used to the feeling.

The nearby shark was a good distraction. "So...are the sharks programmed to be well fed?"

Claudia was tempted to attempt to hitch a ride on one of the larger fish.

What? It wasn't like she'd try that in the REAL ocean. . . .

This was awesome. Kitty was having way too much fun checking everything out, and maybe trying to touch a couple of the creatures. Because they couldn't kill her in the Danger Shop.

Holographic wetness was way cool, and Clark took his time wandering around and checking out the neat creatures in the reef.

Spock found being surrounded by this amount of water...unnerving, not that he would admit that. It was completely alien and, well, just wrong to him.

Sure, the Danger Shop made it hard to teleport with any accuracy, or without nausea, but Kurt was TOTALLY going to do it anyway, to get on the back of one of the porpoises. After a few false starts, he grabbed one, and whooped loudly as he got pulled along.

Cara's opinion on oceans was that they were both wet and salty.

Bobby wasn't as excited about the oceans as he was about space, but of course he recognised the need to preserve them and the creatures within.

In fact, if you asked him, you might get a lecture on why the oceans were important and why a rapidly warming climate would cause major, major problems.
