So You Say You Want a Revolution: Week 6, Period 3

"Good to see you all survived the weekend and the, ah, parental invasion," Aly said with a bit of a grin as she surveyed the class. "I enjoyed speaking with your visitors and can promise I didn't give away too many of the school's secrets." She rolled her eyes a little at the idea of accidentally giving any secrets away at all.

"First up, let's have a chat about last week's topic - flirting and making friends. I asked you to try to use some of the techniques over the weekend as you met your friends' family and friends. If you did and you found them helpful, horrifically not, or something in the middle, let's hear how it worked out."

When everyone was done talking, Aly pulled everyone's attention back to her. "Now we're moving on to talk about another side of that same coin - mass communication. When you're starting a revolution - or any movement - you're going to have to distill your message to something people can understand without thinking about it too much. Long heartfelt debates are good for some things, but most people don't have the patience or brainpower to actually sit there and consider every aspect of the situation."

"So you need to get a message out - something short and to the point. But that's not necessarily the difficult part. The difficult part is getting everyone in your group to agree on what that message should be - and what it means." She took a moment to observe the class and make sure everyone was following. "Today, I want you to divide up into your groups. Each group has been assigned a quote from a writer or revolutionary that I want you to decide - as a group - what it means and then restate it into a message that could be used for the people."

Nico's Group
"In a revolution, as in a novel, the most difficult part to invent is the end."
~Alexis de Tocqueville

Rinoa's Group
"You cannot make a revolution with silk gloves."
~Joseph Stalin

Percy's Group
“Every revolution was first a thought in one man's mind”
~Ralph Waldo Emerson

Ino's Group
“When liberty comes with hands dabbled in blood it is hard to shake hands with her.”
~Oscar Wilde

Aly read each of the quotes on the whiteboard out loud for the class, assigning them to their groups. "Everyone have a handle on what you need? Questions? Then go to, I'll be wandering around if any questions come up."

"When I ain't getting much in return," she said loftily, "I resort to getting a reaction."

Reaction: gotten. She was appeased.

... Ino was a strange duck sometimes, yes.

"Reading, writing, and arithmetic's actually part of a song I know. It's kind of a stupid song but it's a song," Percy shared, still wary. "I was trying to be funny, not boring."
intraspective: (oh neat!)

"...how is that a song?" she asked dubiously. "For serious?"

"Yeah, it's just part of the song. Um, lemme see if I can remember it."

He knew his mother had chanted it at him a few times, just to try and get him to like school but he'd just ended up hating that song.

"It's like 'school days, school days, dear old golden rule days. Readin', writin' and 'rithmetic taught to the tune of a hickory stick."

It should be noted that Percy didn't sing any of that. Just said it outright because he was not singing.

Her eyes sparkled with laughter.

"What?" she asked innocently. "You're not going to sing for me?"

"Not a chance," Percy said and shook his head. "You can just imagine those words being sung. I'm not singing. No."
intraspective: (puppy eyes!)

"Why not?" she asked, wide-eyed. "I wouldn't tell no one."

"I'm not singing," he insisted, shaking his head. "Not a chance. I don't sing, I won't sing, and I won't change my mind for anyone."
intraspective: (o rly?)

"What's wrong with singing?" Ino answered, changing her approach slightly. "That's awfully vehement of you."

"Nothing's wrong with singing, I just don't sing," he replied, shrugging. "Not my thing, not something I wanna do. I'm not a singer."
intraspective: (explaining)

"It gets girls, you know," she said innocently.

He should absolutely not trust anything she said here, no.

"And I bet you've got an--interesting voice. Could be considered trainin' for a revolution! Good leaders know how to use their voice!"

It was a... nice try... or something?

"Why are you trying to get me to sing?" Percy asked, looking vaguely wary. "I mean, your arguments aren't bad but you barely know me and you want me to sing? So you can laugh, maybe?"
intraspective: (ummm)

"Because you don't want to," she said impishly. "And it hurts no one and it ain't a horrible thing to poke at."

"Yeah, I don't wanna sing and you're not gonna get me to sing either," Percy promised with a shake of his head. "I don't sing."

"Would you have sung if I'd had a better reason?" she asked interestedly.

"Nah, no," he said and shook his head. "I don't wanna sing. It's just not gonna happen."

Not without island interference, at least.
intraspective: (oh hi!)

"Can't you even come up with a real reason?" she teased, fussing with a pen.

intraspective: (flower blooming)

"Sorry. That's what you're gonna get." Percy shrugged, not really caring if it was boring or not. It wasn't gonna happen.
intraspective: (Nyah!)

She stuck her tongue out at him and settled back to focus on the class.

Very mature, Ino. Very mature.
