Jaina had ~~handwavily~~ sent the students notice to come meet in the Danger Shop today, throwing off her entire mental schedule for the class but know what, she was just going to have to deal. Considering the room was done up to look like the interior of a Star Destroyer when they got there, she figured they would be okay with that.

"Sorry to disappoint anyone who might have been looking forward to shooting things after the weekend, but we're not going to be flying today," she explained. "What you're standing in now is the bridge of a Star Destroyer. This is very different than what we've been covering so far, though this is definitely a warship, with massive firepower meant to be able to take out entire star systems. Hence the name. These things get up to nearly four kilometers in length but can be even bigger than that, and can house squadrons of ships and a crew of several thousand. It can also be used as a carrier, which I'm sure is a huge surprise with a ship this big. The bridge here serves as the command center for everything goes on, and with as many people on one of these as there tend to be, unless you're on a Star Destroyer when it's either brand new, or about to go be destroyed, you probably won't see it empty like this.

"So you get to take advantage of that today," said Jaina. "Take a look around. You can head on below and check out the computers, play around with the navicomputer a bit, or just stay up top here and stare out the window. Though I warn you, there's stars and blackness, and that's about it in space. But if that's your thing, I won't judge."

You're on a boat! (No not really but the song's been stuck in my head)

The important question to Tahiri was, was the hull painted red?

Okay, it wasn't that important, but . . . she missed the Errant Venture.

Momoko was upset about the not flying part of class today, not so much the not-blowing-things-up. She was, however, impressed with the massive size of the ship. It could destroy WHOLE STAR SYSTEMS?!? That was, like, planets and moons and suns and maybe some asteroids and... whoah.

Wander around, alone or with people, and check out the bright shiny lights in all the pictures.

Oh, please, like Leia wasn't going to shamelessly abuse this opportunity to learn as much about Star Destroyers as she could. It could come in handy some day.

Cally would be wandering around, yes -- with her mouth open in a mixture of awe and discomfort.

She'd never seen a ship this big. She'd never heard of a ship this big; even the Federation didn't, so far as she knew, have such things. Probably because their aim was to control star systems, not destroy them. The threat of it, though... the thought of a weapon like this being available in her own galaxy made Cally shudder.

Tahiri had spent months on a Star Destroyer, once; she hadn't been in the best shape of her life, mentally and physically, since it was where she'd spent her recovery period after her captivity on Yavin 4, but she'd spent a lot of time wandering around.

Granted, it had been Booster Terrik's Star Destroyer, so it was hardly fitted out for fleet service; most fleet capital ships hadn't done time as space casinos. But she'd crashed one spectacularly in Master Skywalker's class last year, so she wasn't completely unfamiliar with the controls.

She'd have been happy to accompany anyone else around, if they wanted, but for now she'd stand and stare out the viewports at the stars; the sight of the stars really never got old to her.

Ben didn't exactly have the fondest memories of Star Destroyers these days, which was why, instead of exploring the controls like he normally would have, he was spending time staring out at the darkness and the stars.

He'd grown up looking at that view, and it was still soothing.

This was the coolest thing ever. Bobby was wandering about with his mouth hanging open as he tried to remember everything.

She maybe misses the military sometimes shhh.

Momoko had a few questions, oddly enough, so before her tour, she approached.

"Jaina... I mean, Professor Jaina," Momoko sighed amusingly at herself. Silly time travel, bringing classmates back as teachers. "Since this ship is so big, ~~does it transform~~ how is it built? I mean, can it even lift off a planet?"

"You can drop the 'Professor', Momoko," Jaina assured her with a little smile. "If you see a Star Destroyer on a planet, it's usually crashed there in pieces. They don't have liftoff capability. They're built at shipyards, in space. The entire construction goes on there and they take off from there."

"Got it!" Momoko grinned back. "And building it already in space totally makes more sense. So, since it's so big, it can't move fast, right? So, it's sort of like a moving space station more than a ship, right? Just a base for smaller fighters?"

"No, it's fully capable of doing damage all on its own. Even if it had no smaller fighters, or if they weren't doing the fighting, it's still got ion cannons and turbolaser batteries and tractor beams, all depending on the class of ship. The Star Destroyer's the main player, the fighters are support." Said from a fighter pilot, too.

"Eh?" Momoko was stunned. "This big and still actually a fighter? I don't know if that's amazing or terrifying."

"They're not nearly as maneuverable as a one-man fighter, but they can corner pretty well, and I've seen plenty of people taken out by the turbolasers on one of these things," Jaina told her. "Plus the bridge here is where those in command will be watching the battle, and directing things that go on via comm, so it's the hub for what happens."

Wow.

"Even with all that firepower, it must be so totally different fighting with this type of ship. Being here and removed from it all must make it almost easier, more like it's not real? I mean, can you even tell you're moving when you fly it?" Momoko shook her head.

"I've never been at the helm of one of these," she admitted. "But I have been up here as things are going on, and there is a real detachment. There's a definite difference between watching it going on up here as opposed to being in the middle of the battle itself." Even if you were empathic.

Momoko nodded. "I think I'll stick to actually fighting. I don't like the idea of being able to do this much damage and not accepting the responsibility."

She then turned a sly grin up at Jaina. "But while we're here, where did you say the pilot sits? It can corner pretty well?"

Someone had a thing for flying, yes.

I had a dream where Dylan McKay was on a killing spree, dressing up as Jason in a hockey mask and terrorizing drivers in their cars before going after them with machetes in an attempt to get to Brandon Walsh, despite the fact that this took place in that period where Brandon let Dylan stay with them and Brenda was all walking in on him in the shower. What does this mean?
