So, really, George had considered just sitting in the back the whole time and not saying anything, so that maybe everyone would glare at each other and then leave. Except she'd been at that stupid table at the fucking club fair, so people would know it was 'her' club and expect her to do something.

Which, so what? George was great at disappointing people who had unrealistic expectations. It was practically a hobby.

... and yes, expecting her to give a shit, that was a seriously unrealistic expectation.

This was awkward. Fine.

"So, you're here," she said. "I don't know why you're here. This club was just a stupid joke. I don't know what I'm supposed to do with it. I guess you can ... ugh, we should do that stupid thing where people introduce themselves but I don't even give a shit. Whatever."

See? Disappointment achieved. It was their own damn fault for signing up for Apathy Club.

Apathy Club doesn't really "do" Arrive and Mingle. But if you want to be a social butterfly, hey, great. Bother people. Fine.

Squall sat down in a chair and stared at the floor. Sure, he could do that just as well in his room, but... Well, why wasn't he? This club sucked.

Jono couldn't help but note that, as he grabbed a spot in the back, that the whole point of doing so was somewhat defeated when odds were high that everybody in this moronic club was probably going to attempt to do the same.

Whatever. At least he'd managed to drag Rosalind along. He didn't have to suffer through this thing alone.

... This thing that he'd willingly signed up for.

Apathetic?

Was not the right word for Rosalind at the moment, no. Especially not given the way she was simmering and glowering at Jono in particular.

First: he’d lied to get her to come. Something interesting, right. Right.

Second: he’d signed her up for the Apathy Club.

So that was a pissed off Turk who was, nonetheless, not walking out because she was fairly sure that she’d never hear the end of it from Jono if she did.

But if she could kill someone with her eyes? Jono would be dead dead dead.

Jenny took a seat at random, because she didn't care, and lit a cigarette. Ahhh, delicious nicotine.

Sure. Whatever. Get up and ... tell people who you are. If you have to. Nobody fucking cares who you are.

"We don't need to introduce ourselves anyway," Squall pointed out. "We all know each other."

Well, he recognized everyone and could probably remember their names. That was the same thing, wasn't it?

"Then don't," George said. Problem: solved. "You think I care? I didn't mean to start this fucking club in the first place."

Squall shrugged. "Whatever."

"Whatever," she agreed. But she found herself unable to leave it there.

"So why did you even come?"

He didn't know!!!

"I signed up," Squall answered. "Why did YOU come?"

.... Well, that backfired.

"I don't know." She shrugged. "I was bored."

"And you couldn't think of anything BETTER to do?"

Seriously, what kind of person was so completely unable to think of something to amuse themselves with that they'd come to a stupid crappy club like this?

Wait. Don't answer that.

Rosalind eloquently arched an eyebrow.

That was enough, right? Then she could go back to glowering in Jono's direction.

And Jono? He was going to give Rosalind a look that was about as innocent as possible while still managing to look more or less apathetic about the world at large.

Really.

Very nice. Apathetic, and a minimum of effort expended.

George would have applauded, but ... well. Rosalind understood.

Jenny shrugged and took a drag off her cig.

This is the stupidest club ever. Why are you even here? And could that George girl give any less of a shit? Way to not run a club, there.

Who knows if he's going to show up. It's that Farnsworth guy. Nobody talk to him and maybe he'll go away.

Oh, Farnsworth showed up. He had to see this with his own eyes and then, once there, remark with outrage, "Why have people even bothered with this ridiculous club? You all clearly have no point in life."

"Then don't come," George said. "This whole thing is stupid. Why do we need a faculty advisor just to sit around staring at each other?"

"Why do you need a club at all if all you're doing is sitting around staring at each other?"

It will only lead to further disappointment all around.

Writing Apathy Club made me giggle.

I think I'm doing it wrong.
