Student Council | Friday Lunchtime

Another year, another batch of wide-eyed youngsters for Barney to corrupt. And George, but he was well on his way! Barney gathered the group in the classroom he'd transformed into his very own boardroom last year, complete with mahogany table, plush swivel chairs, and an awesome gavel that only Barney got to hold, lo siento el presidente.

He smacked the gavel against the stand when he felt like getting things going. "Settle down, kiddos, and welcome to your 2010 student council. Good job being better than your peers, not that it was that hard if this crowd is any indication. Today you guys get to talk Parents Weekend so I'm gonna let you guys talk it out. Any questions can be directed to your new senior leader, El presidente, Alexander Michaelangelo Karev!" No, he didn't care if that wasn't Karev's name, it just sounded good.

"My mother is coming," Quinn announced, in a voice that had an edge of 'so I'm doomed' attached to it. "What are the chances we'll get through this without anybody turning into a gremlin before her eyes?"

Oh, god. Wes hadn't even thought off that. He'd been busy worrying about how his father was going to start criticizing him as soon as he showed up, and would find and announce all the blatantly obvious ways Wes had messed up since arriving here. But of course this would be an issue as well.

"I - I'd also like to avoid that," he put in meekly. "And, er - politically incorrect as it may seem, perhaps we could arrange for the more, er, diverse students to be kept out of sight of the more conservative parents?"

Totally not racist. Just that he did not particularly want to know what would happen if his father caught sight of a green kid. Or a vampire. Or Faith. Scary.

"I almost want to see you try and explain that to those that don't fit the 'standard' normal," Ino said dryly. "And watch their friends go up in flames even if they don't. If you've got to say anything, say some students are havin' a costume club or something to your parents."

"Or perhaps the other direction," Rilla replied. "Section off part of the park for parents who will react...poorly...to the island's more insane aspects. My parents will have a difficult enough time understanding that boys and girls share the same floor in the dormitories, let alone that someone might come from another planet."

"I don't want to see anyone sent home, but is lying the best approach? If they're coming here, it's almost impossible to make sure that they don't see something we don't want them to see. Consider telling them as soon as they get here. Then they hear it from you and you have the weekend to convince them not to drag you home."

Kyle didn't understand, no.

"Right. I tell the truth, and then I go home and they probably send me to the scary church school where they think showing your knees is sinful. And that's if they don't lock me up in an asylum," Quinn said flatly.

Still. She wasn't completely on board with the segregation plans -- if nothing else, they seemed like they'd be impractical.

"I think Ino's right, though. We can't ask the" -- she caught herself before she said freaks -- "diverse students to climb into closets. Probably the best we can do is distraction and flat-out lies."

"Yeah, I'm as heartless as they come -- " He was not. " -- but I don't think we can section of the park because it's inevitably gonna get out. I mean, if any guests take a walk into Caritas, they're gonna see the zombies."

And probably hear some crap music.

"Go with lies and misdirection, if you have," he agreed. "I don't have anyone coming and my family's too caught up in other shit to really know what's going on here anyway."

Oh, if he only knew that he was going to get a guest. He'd be so surprised.

"If the guests really have a hard time, might wanna take 'em off island to eat and stuff."

"Maybe we could arrange to have a bus on a certain schedule?" Ino suggested, leaning forward. "In order to facilitate that, I mean. That way people don't have to worry about how they're going to get there and back, you know?"

"I have no idea how much that costs but someone's gotta have some deep pockets around here and doesn't want their parents freaking out," Alex said, nodding a bit.

"And my family is coming from 1913," Rilla added. "Off the island isn't any better."

Alex blinked and then remembered that this was the girl with the bad cookies.

"Just don't bake for 'em," he mumbled, looking away and smiling to himself. "Okay. There's really no way your family's gonna be able to avoid everything. You're just gonna have to prepare them or something."

"In your case," she said, smiling at Rilla. "I would tell them that it's an elaborate production the students have put on in order to welcome the parents. That will allow a number of oddities to be swept under the rug of 'students are weird' which is a fairly universal thing to believe, I think?"

"I can try," Rilla replied. "It's widely known that Americans are insane anyway."

At least in Rilla's particular section of Canada it was.

"For the bus idea," Ino said, glancing at Alex. "There's one or two people I can ask, if we wanted to go through with that? Or the school might be willing to subsidize it, if we explained it to them."

"Did we want to have a theme for the decorations?" Ino asked, toying with a bit of her hair. "Something simple, maybe? A general autumn theme? Or did we want something more unique?"

Re: Talk PW

[identity profile] rilla-myrilla.livejournal.com 2010-09-24 03:08 pm (UTC)(link)
"I like autumn," Rilla said. "Anything more unique might lead right into the sort of questions some of us are trying to avoid. No one can object to leaves."

Re: Talk PW

[identity profile] chief-cheerio.livejournal.com 2010-09-24 04:53 pm (UTC)(link)
"I like autumn. Leaves, acorns, maybe a couple pumpkins," Quinn seconded. "Banners in the school colors. Being elaborate takes a lot of time. I can't speak for the rest of you, but I don't feel like spending the next week of my life painting backdrops and moving props around."
