Boom-De-Yada Science - Danger Shop, Wednesday, Period 1 [Week 4]

"We're on a bridge, Charlie!" the Doctor declared. He really shouldn't have given Sarah Jane's son his email address. He wound up with links to YouTube videos in his inbox and they really were quite addicting. There was probably something nefarious going on in there knowing Google, but investigating would have to wait. "Anyway, hello. Bridges. You're standing on one. This is the Tower Bridge in London, which is in Great Britain. Look it up. You might know it as the London Bridge, but that's wrong, because the London Bridge is that one over there," he pointed to the next one up the river, "and you should know better than to believe everything television tells you.

It's a combined bascule and suspension bridge, if you're interested in that sort of thing, but if you wanted to know all about the mechanics of a bridge you should go and try to build one. Or read about it, if you're not the hands-on type." The Doctor leaned over the edge, then spun around and flung his arms out to gesture at the towers. "Bridges are so much more than marvels of architecture. There are natural bridges, but they're not nearly so interesting as artificial bridges. Does anyone know why?" Like he was going to give them a chance to answer. Please. "They're symbols, and we all know how powerful those can be. Bridges close gaps. Bridges are a sign of someone not only going 'well, that's impossible to cross without a lot of effort' but deciding to make that normally insurmountable gap, or at least really difficult to cross gap, accessible to everyone. Determination. Hope. Dedication. A service to the community. All of those things can be embodied in bridges." He looked up at it and patted the railing. "And that's pretty admirable for a few bits and bolts thrown together. What do you think about it all? About building something for yourself and for other people? About knowing that something is so big and so hard to reach, but getting there anyway? Or we could just talk about bridges," the Doctor said with a little smile.

Christian stood on the bridge, staring into the city.

Fifteen minute's walk would get him to a place where he could catch the Underground home. Only it wouldn't be home, not really, not a hundred-odd years later -- not even if his house still stood.

His thoughts were on the odd wave of homesickness he suddenly felt, far more than they were on bridges.

"Hey~ Am I interrupting something?" She could tell a dreamy look when she saw one.

The bridge was big and interesting, but hey, it was a bridge; Zatanna was bound to run into someone sooner or later.

Christian smiled lightly. "Nothing in particular," he said, and pointed. "It's just that -- do you see that park way out to your left, beyond the church? There's no way at all to see it, but my house is just a bit beyond it. Or where my house was, anyhow."

Zatanna tried, she really did, but indeed, there was no way she could spot past the park. "Huh, that's so cool." She wondered what would have been if the Doctor had brought the Goden Gate bridge instead...although she hadn't tried to find her house from there.

"...What do you mean by was?"

"it's 1895 at home," Christian explained. "They tear things down. Even in a city this old."

Which made him sad.

Zatanna bit her lower lip, feeling the sadness on that statement. "I suppose they do", said softly as she glanced again. "But you can't be entirely sure. I mean, this isn't the real place in the present, right?" It was only a projection, so they were probably stuck in the bridge, anyway. So even if they tried to visit the house...

"Hey! We can totally visit the place where your house is if we can travel to England, right?" Because she assumed that Christian's world was just like the one they were in. "It would probably involve planes and, well, maybe where we don't have classes, but if you really want to know, I think we could even find someone to take us, or you there." It wasn't half as easy as it sounded, but she knew there were teleporters around, right? She didn't want to make the spell because they might end up somewhere else entirely.

"Oh, I suppose," Christian said casually. "I'd do that if I really wanted to go. It's not a bad idea, actually."

"Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeell? There is supposed to be a week off in what, three weeks? Four?" Careful, Christian; once Zatanna got her mind on something it wasn't easy to dissuade her. "I'm so not making you visit your place, though, so tell me if you decide to go. It sounds like a good excuse to see new places." Or places she knew, but in new worlds. Details.

"I'll see what else happens that week," Christian promised. "It's a good idea, I just don't know if I'll have the time to travel. and even if I do, I'd rather go someplace I've never seen before."

Zatanna shrugged, smiling. "It's okay." She had to admit, people all around her had their minds set on other things than their families and homes, which made her feel...a little clingy, perhaps.

"Like...where? Or you are the kind of guy that would simply spin a world globe and point at somewhere randomly?"

"Oh, I'd love to be that type!" Christian enthused. "But what I was actually thinking was that I've heard sometimes the school organizes trips. If it's to someplace new and beautiful..."
