Introduction to Personal Weaponry [Monday, second period]
Today there was, surprise, surprise, a pile of weapons on the floor of the danger shop. Blades. A rather varied assortment, too. Everything from pocket knives to claymores.
"I'm going to assume you're all familiar enough with either television, film, or actual weapons to recognize some of these," Max began, waving at the jumble. "Blades are a rather common type of weapon, but they're also generally obviously a weapon. While you can hide something small in your pocket, and sticks could be tools that aren't weapons, blades are pretty much just that."
"And if some of you are wondering whether I'm introducing weapons in the order I am, congratulations. I am. A blade is, in some sense, a combination of a stick and a punch dagger. It's long and provides leverage, and it's also narrow to focus force onto a narrow area of whatever you hit."
"Some blades, you might notice, also have pointed tips so that they can be used for stabbing, but some don't. With few exceptions, blades are designed to cut. And they're designed to do so at a far enough range to keep you relatively safe, and with enough power that one or two hits will take out your opponent."
"Today we're going to keep things simple. Each of you will come up here and look over the weapons. Feel free to pick them up, test their balance, and examine them. Find something you're comfortable with, or can at least imagine yourself getting comfortable with." Max grinned. "Once you've done that, find someone who's picked a weapon you most certainly wouldn't be comfortable with, and ask that person why they picked what they did."
"The goal for today is to learn what you're comfortable with, but also to put some thought into why you are, and what you're not comfortable with. And how your fellow students are different."

The lecture
Re: The lecture
Please excuse him if he's getting a little twitchy waiting for his opportunity to root through the weapons. This is the stuff he knows.

SWORDS!
Re: SWORDS!
He was giving it an experimental twirl while he waited around for a partner. This actually wasn't all that different from the SOLDIER-issue longsword that he was used to.
... Well. It was a bit shorter.
Re: SWORDS!
He looked up, spotted Zack's massive monster sword, and grinned. That was definitely something he wouldn't be comfortable using. He walked over. "That's, er, that's quite a large sword," he said, impressed.
Then wished he hadn't. Because innuendo. Oops.
Re: SWORDS!
"It's not too bad, I guess," Zack replied, shooting a grin at Wesley. "I'm used to handling bigger."
See?
"Waaay different from what you grabbed, huh?"
Re: SWORDS!
"Yes, this dagger is quite different from the sword you chose," Wesley agreed, choosing his words much more carefully this time. "May I ask why you selected that one?"
Re: SWORDS!
A pause, and he leaned forward a little to look at the... dagger.
"Why did you pick that one?"
Re: SWORDS!
Also, the engravings on the hilt were pretty.
Re: SWORDS!
... Wesley wouldn't be able to lift that one, either.
"Hey, that makes sense. There's no reason to run around waving it about all of the time, right? Element of surprise?"
