"Today, we're back to a little hands-on work," Kerrigan said. The Danger Shop had been set up as... a hallway with four identical doors, this time. "I want you to form up as pairs. One of you takes a black box, the other a white," and she waved two small, also identical boxes around. "Pressing the right side will put down a pawn. That's your footsoldiers. Pressing the left puts down a tower-- archers, riflemen, snipers, whatever you want to call it."

She tossed one of the two to the first student she laid her eyes on.

"Behind these doors are four different kinds of terrain. You will pick a door without knowing which. You will then both walk into opposite directions for five minutes, while assessing your environment. Then you will deploy your 'troops'."

Her lips widened in a not entirely genuine smile.

"The computer will determine which one of you would 'win' by most fortuitous troop placement alone," she said, "Though it's not going to tell you. I want you to come back out, fire up one of the computers over there, and look over what you did in birds' eye-- figure out what you did, what your opponent did, and how fucked you are. Now, go."

There's four of them. They all look completely identical.

Behind this door lies a lush rainforest that seems to stretch out for miles and miles. It's hard to navigate.

Behind this door lies a desert. Visibility is high, but it's easy to lose sight of what's where in the endless sandy hills.

This is a very mountainous region indeed. Treacherous passes abound, and the places that aren't passes are very hard to climb. Nevermind the cliffs...

Unlike the others, this area doesn't look desolate. In fact, it's an urban area, though if there are any people there at all, they seem to have hidden away in their houses.

It looks like an old European city, all winding roads and random alleyways that don't seem to be in places they should be.

When you're done placing pawns and towers (or just chatting with your partner and wandering around and calling it a day; Kerrigan wouldn't put it past you) you can check out what the two of you did on topdown view.

She was in the hallway the whole time-- keeping an eye on the students via a console.

You know, normal people's parents are the ones that keep you from getting really drunk and getting hit on by Floridans who look like Ben Stiller. But not my dad, oh no.

James groaned, trying to remember all of the battle planning he'd overheard and been forced to look over as part of his 'training' the past few years.

James was leaning towards door number four, and waited for someone to partner against.

Lovely. Armengar again. James pressed a hand to his face, eyes closed, as he remembered it. Tens of thousands of troops against an army a tenth or less its size.

James scouted quickly, establishing a good position for base camp, and arrayed his resources (three footsoldiers and one archer tower at every intersection, all within easy reinforcement distance from the base camp) in rings around his center point.

Who was going to use her telepathy against her classmates? EMMA. Of course.

Emma was there, and available for those afraid to ask the teacher questions.

Well, then, this was certainly intriguing. Alexander listened carefully, to make sure that he had maintained all the rules and nuances of the game they were about to pursue.

Alexander considered the choices of boxes and the choices of doors and then the choices of partners; the instructions had built him up to be strategic about even that.

Karla was thoughtful, sketching out ideas for fortification and troops. Nothing concrete until she saw her terrain, of course, but some basic ideas from the second handout might be useful to note down.
