Food Appreciation [Week 3, Period 4, Mon. 9/13]

Monday afternoon meant food class and today they were back in the classroom. Seemingly without food. John was at the front, patiently waiting for the kids to show up. Hopefully they were hungry.

He started talking when class was meant to start as timing was an issue today. "Now that football season's started and someone's bound to have a party, I think it's important you all understand the most important food to any gathering here on Earth."

John paused, letting that sink in as he paced at the front of the classroom, waiting to see the man in blue appear in the doorway. Right on time. "Pizza! Today we're trying every kind I could get the guys down at Pizza Planet to mix up for us. So there's cheese, pepperoni, mushroom, veggie, meat explosion, and probably anything else you can think up." Because he was good at giving orders and had the pizza man setting up the boxes on the table while he talked. "There's also some stuff I wouldn't try, but you might want to. Like the everything pizza with and without sardines. Hey, I hear sardines are good for the heart. Who knew? Anyway, get eating and then I want you to compare methods. Is pizza better enjoyed folded? Cut with knife and fork? Is there a wrong way to do this? You tell me. Or, more likely, each other 'cause who wants to talk to the teacher, right?"

"But they're so much fun!" gushed Ariel, with her speared pizza, clearly on the fast track to winning Jane over with a comment like that.

"Huh," Jane said, totally having not expected anyone to call knives and forks that ever. "Do you think spoons are a barrel of laughs, too?"

"Oh, absolutely," said Ariel, bobbing her head enthusiastically before she laughed and held out her hands. "And don't even get me started about sporks!"

No. Seriously. Don't.

Sorry about this.

"What's with sporks?" Jane asked. Every school needed a crazy person, right? Apparently Jane felt the need to engage.

And Ariel, really, was all to eager to oblige.

"Aren't they just the coolest?" she gushed. "I mean, how brilliant! A fork and a spoon, all in one! I mean, the only thing anyone could possibly hold against a spork is that it means that you have to forsake having a fork and a spoon, but sometimes it's a very easy sacrifice. I do feel bad, though; I mean, the fork and the spoon are so great on their own, why would you need a spork, but the novelty of it is just great."
