The Science of Deduction, Friday - 9/10

Today, the class was left a note to meet in the Danger shop instead of the normal classroom. Because someone had been given the chance to recreate a crime scene for the students without all those pesky little details about child endangerment and contaminating evidence.

The room was empty save for a woman in an alarming shade of pink from head to toe. She lay prone, face down and unmoving on the floor.

"One of my more recent cases," Sherlock said in lieu of greeting the class. "Suicide. In a manner of speaking. Like this woman, three others before her had gone to a place they had no known reason to be and taken the exact same poison. No signs of force, they've clearly taken the pill, chewed and swallowed it all on their own. Serial suicides according to the police."

He stepped around the body with the care of someone accustomed to crime scenes. "Unlike the previous three, this one has left a note scratched into the floor as she died. R-A-C-H-E was carved into the wood with her fingernails." One might take note at the chipped, worn down appearance of what had once been perfectly manicured nails on the hand next to the letters.

"Your task is to pair off and ascertain as much about the scene as you can manage," Sherlock informed them, pulling out his phone to check it for messages. "And for anyone who may have discovered my colleague's blog, you will need to explain your reasoning for each step. Doctor Watson left a number of the important details out in his attempt to make it more--" He sighed. "--romantic."

Claudia . . . had totally read the blog about this one. What? It was some of the only not redacted information she could get on the teacher. It read like a love letter a bad mystery novel.

She figured if the guy was as smart as he claimed, he'd've figured out by their conversation last week that she'd be hunting down whatever she could find on him online, so she decided to keep an eye out for stuff that hadn't been included in the blog.

And, you know, how the guy could tell there was a pink suitcase missing.

It wasn't the first time Ben had been to a crime scene, but the last one he'd really been paying attention to was for his mother's murder, so he was concentrating hard on shoving those images out of his mind.

"Want to work together?" he asked.

Claudia nodded. "Sounds good. Anything you notice off the bat?"

Ben crouched down, momentarily wishing the crime scene wasn't quite so realistic, and pointed to the victim's hand. "She wrote with her left hand, rather than her right," he said.

Claudia nodded. "And the message was pretty damn important to her. Maybe the name of her killer?"

"Rache?" Ben looked thoughtful. "Could be. Would the killer have left something that obvious behind for us to find? If this wasn't a suicide, wouldn't they have stuck around to make sure the poison worked?"

"Maybe not, if he thought it was a sure thing. It definitely took her awhile to die. Scratching something like that into the wood takes time."

He nodded. "Ruined her nailpolish stuff and got her rings all dirty."

"Yeah. . . ." Claudia circled the woman thoughtfully. "Her coat's kind of damp. I'm guessing it was raining before she was killed."

"Do you think we've got other people looking for her car?" Ben asked, frowning slightly. "This seems like a weird place to just end up." He looked around. "Do you see car keys or anything?"

"I'm thinking she wasn't driving one. Check out the mud on the back of her leg. Doesn't really scream 'I drove here'."

"Maybe she didn't have a choice. It's kind of a weird spatter pattern, right? It's only on one of her legs."
momslilassassin: ([neg] Ben says "um wtf")

"Would that give a straight up and down spatter pattern? Looks more like it came off, like, a small wheel."
momslilassassin: ([neg] lipbiting)

"A really small wheel," Ben replied. "A mouse droid?"

Wrong galaxy, Ben.

"Mouse droid," Ben repeated. "They're about this big--" he held his hand about a foot apart, "carry messages, are basically indestructible..."

"Lots of things. A cart she'd probably be pushing in front of her. . . ." Claudia didn't want to just go "a suitcase!", since she'd read the blog and already knew that was missing.

Still, a small wheeled suitcase could definitely spatter up her leg like that.

"A really big purse?" Ben suggested. "I don't see anything on her that would hold her wallet and cell phone."

And everyone had a wallet and cell phone.

"Her jacket might have pockets for those." But it probably didn't. Women's fashion designers were all too happy to get to add a purse to any outfit rather than pockets. "It'd have to be a really big purse."

He owned pretty much two outfits. He didn't know much about fashion in general.
