The Science of Deduction, Friday - 9/10

Today, the class was left a note to meet in the Danger shop instead of the normal classroom. Because someone had been given the chance to recreate a crime scene for the students without all those pesky little details about child endangerment and contaminating evidence.

The room was empty save for a woman in an alarming shade of pink from head to toe. She lay prone, face down and unmoving on the floor.

"One of my more recent cases," Sherlock said in lieu of greeting the class. "Suicide. In a manner of speaking. Like this woman, three others before her had gone to a place they had no known reason to be and taken the exact same poison. No signs of force, they've clearly taken the pill, chewed and swallowed it all on their own. Serial suicides according to the police."

He stepped around the body with the care of someone accustomed to crime scenes. "Unlike the previous three, this one has left a note scratched into the floor as she died. R-A-C-H-E was carved into the wood with her fingernails." One might take note at the chipped, worn down appearance of what had once been perfectly manicured nails on the hand next to the letters.

"Your task is to pair off and ascertain as much about the scene as you can manage," Sherlock informed them, pulling out his phone to check it for messages. "And for anyone who may have discovered my colleague's blog, you will need to explain your reasoning for each step. Doctor Watson left a number of the important details out in his attempt to make it more--" He sighed. "--romantic."

Will was, at first, distracted by the existence of the room itself. The possibility of a staged crime scene had occured to him, but a classroom would still look like a classroom... except this didn't. In fact, it appeared to occupy a much larger physical space than should have been possible.

As fascinating as the Danger Shop itself was, he forced himself to focus on the task at hand, as well as looking around to see if anyone needed a partner.

Parker still didn't consider herself much of a team player, but the assignment was to be done with a partner. She noticed one of her classmates looking around and, keeping in mind Sophie's lessons, smiled at him. Parker being Parker, it was a bit too wide and gleeful for the situation but still. She was trying.

"Shall we do this thing?" she asked brightly.

"Yes," William took a deep breath, finding his classmate's obvious glee at the situation a bit, well. Unnerving. "We shall." Despite intellectually being aware that it was a simulation and not a real dead body, he couldn't help but perform the sign of the cross as he knelt to examine it closer.

"She looks like she was trying to be cotton candy," Parker remarked, mildly offended at just how... pink everything was.

"Cotton candy?" Will wrinkled his nose. "I'm not sure what that is, but it doesn't sound appetizing." Especially if it was that particular shade of pink.

"Very sweet. And sticky." Parker knelt, her eyes going right to what she considered important: the woman's jewelery. "She's got some nice expensive pieces. But nothing too outrageous."

William's eyes, on the other hand, were drawn to what she'd been trying to write. "What could be so important that she'd spend her dying breaths trying to say it?"

"The name of who killed her," Parker suggested.

"Hi I'm Diana let's go look at the fake dead body." Diana said in one sentence, latching on to the random guy who didn't look like he'd be too big of a pain.

"We've met, Miss Hansen," Will pointed out wryly. "And if you insist."

Diana rolled her eyes. "Diana. You ever investigate anything?" She asked, almost bouncing on the balls of her feet.

"Not in this sense of the word," William admitted. What was it with the girls in this class and the bounciness?

There was a mystery! "What sense then?" Diana asked, walking over to the pink lady and wondering what the color had ever done to deserve this.

"I have performed several experiments designed to investigate scientific theories," he explained. "Not quite the same as a criminal investigation I'm afraid," he added, crossing himself as he moved closer to the, er... body.

Diana knelt down and began to gingerly poke at the body. She was a bit more used to having to find holes rather than murder clues. "What did you discover?"

"That applied physics is not nearly as dry and dull as those who do not take the time to understand it would have you think," Will replied.

Diana paused and glanced up. "Is that a complicated way of saying 'stuff blew up'?"

Diana grinned. "Awesome." She turned back to the body. "So...I'm guessing she was a professional of some sort. No one else would match so much and look like they were off to a meeting. Um...either named Rachel or knew someone named Rachel?"

"Hmm, yes," William agreed. "At first glance, one might be tempted to assume she meant 'Rache', German for 'revenge', but look at the way her hand has fallen- she wasn't finished." A sparkle of gold drew his eyes first to her ears, and then her wrist and finally, her left ring finger. "Look at the state of her jewelry. The ring seems rather incongrous, don't you think?"

[identity profile] oops-mbad.livejournal.com 2010-09-10 06:57 pm (UTC)(link)
"And why would she be writing in German in an English speaking country?" Diana pointed out, having no idea about the German bit. "Wedding band, doesn't bother cleaning it. Who cleans their jewelry so much anyway?" She asked, studying the earrings and with a frown began to poke at the woman's clothes.

Will refrained from pointing out she could have been a tourist or on a business trip. Even then, she would have been aware that anyone finding her would likely not speak German. "Someone who places great stock in personal appearances, no doubt."

Diana nodded. "Exactly." She concluded her pat-down of the woman and rocked back on to her heels. "So where's her pink smart phone? She's not that old." Diana should not be allowed to judge age. "She has a nice manicure that matches her shoes that match her jacket that match her make-up to a scary point. Where's her phone then? Or laptop?"
