Boom-De-Yada Science - Danger Shop, Wednesday, Period 1 [Week 2]

There was a pile of cold weather gear outside the Danger Shop this week. There were sweaters, heavy jackets, boots, knitted hats, scarves, goggles (had to have goggles) and snowpants with the bibs that weren't particularly flattering. There was also a scribbled note affixed to the door. 'Put them on.'

The Doctor wasn't wearing any of those things when he finally let the geared-up students in (he wasn't letting anyone in without the gear, but he was open to arguments). He was instead wearing a poncho over his normal clothes and that seemed to be enough. It wasn't enough, but it seemed to be. They were on a rocky area at the very top of a magnificently high mountain with an incredible panoramic view.



"You're all standing on the tallest mountain on Earth," the Doctor said without introduction. "For those of us not from around here, this is Mount Everest. We're 8.85 kilometers above sea level. Don't worry, I've readjusted the oxygen levels so you don't die and lowered the wind and increased the temperature enough to keep the experience without any of you turning blue and fall down. Don't fall down. You'll have a long way to fall. The safety system is working, but that doesn't mean that falling down a mountain won't hurt everything you can possibly feel.

Mount Everest!" He went from stern to excited in an instant. "I'll spare you the history lesson. You can read about all of the specifics on Wikipedia," he said with a wave of his hand. "The important part is what this place means. The tallest of the tall, the highest of the high. This was the unreachable summit for so many centuries. Even now, it's considered an incredible feat. You need lots of gear, preparations, supplies, oxygen tanks and planning to even have a chance, and people still die along the way. If you were to make the actual climb, you'd probably see some of the 150 or so bodies that had to be left here because even now, here in the early 21st century, the amount of coordination and technology required to retrieve the bodies is considered to be too much and the risk too high to other human life to try.

In the face of danger and probable death, humans go out and climb mountains like this one simply because they're here, simply because they can. Some do it for the glory," he admitted, "or for money or for reasons that people do anything. But ask around, meet the people who've climbed the tallest thing you can climb on this planet and you'll find a trend. You'll find people who it because it was there. Because they can. Because why not? It's a big mountain. It's the biggest mountain. Let's climb it! Let's see what's at the top! Let's be on top of the world!" He had a small smile. "Go on. Have a look around. Let your jaws drop if that's your sort of thing. By the end of the class, I want you to tell the class what your Everest is. What's the adventure of your life? Why is it important to have one?"

There is a pile of assorted cold weather gear of all colours and sizes and that note that says to put it on. Will you? Or will you argue with the Doctor once he opens the door?

Hinata had been at the school far too long to argue when a teacher set out clothing. She pulled on what looked like it would fit her and quietly wished for a hair elastic.

Hats were a bit of an irritant when your hair was long and loose.

Cara didn't put on the gear. Her leathers should be more than sufficient to cope with most conditions, and if they weren't then she would simply endure it until the end of class.

Christian found a maroon anorak, and a navy hat, scarf and gloves. He didn't argue; he figured the clothes were there for a reason.

Besides, the scarf was rather dashing.

Lindsay was already wearing her army jacket, but after reading the note, she added a hat, scarf, and gloves.

Claudia dug through the pile for a decent hat, coat, gloves, and scarf which I'd have an icon for if I had any current season screencaps, and yes, goggles. She had no idea what the Doctor had planned, but she was kind of excited to get at least a brief break from the summer weather.

Diana took one look at the clothes and started getting bundled up. Just because she was used to cold weather didn't mean she didn't have a lot of respect for it.

Andy shrugged and put on a parka, scarf and mittens. Better to put on too much and have to take some off than not and end up shivering.

Kitty figured she didn't really have reason to argue. It'd be a mean teacher to make students put on things like parkas in September for no reason. So she went looking for a parka, hat and gloves, trying to make them all match. l

Bruce understood accessorizing in the name of adventure. In his closet, he had outfits for everything up to and including 'rescuing the principal from a mad scientist.' It came in handy once.

So Bruce really had no problem putting on a parka, hat, goggles, and boots.

Ooookay. Clark stared at the clothes but put them on. Who was he to go against a teacher's wishes? Maybe there was even some plaid!

Even if Bobby didn't totally trust the Doctor, he was excited to get dressed up in heavy cold weather gear and see what it was like. Missouri didn't get nearly this cold!

Spock would be putting as much cold weather gear as he could move in on, thank you, as he had no interest whatsoever in hypothermia.

Kurt found a pair of boots that he could at least get his feet into, then laced them up tight and hoped for the best. Mittens were easier to find, and all the rest of the gear he grabbed fit fine.

Including the cute little knitted wool cap with a pompom.

She was very glad she'd dressed warmly now that they were there but, once that thought passed through, Hinata was more engrossed in staring.

This was a view that deserved staring.

That would be Cara and the newly recruited Bobby McCallister, who the Doctor pointed to and said "TA" so everyone knew who he was. Please don't push them off the mountain.

Cara supposed she should be grateful the Doctor hadn't made any comments about setting things on fire this week.

In any case, anyone trying to push her off the mountain would probably find themselves airborne instead.
