Cultural Appreciation, Week II [Wednesday, Periods 4 & 5]

Students met at the Causeway today, and Ghanima waited until everyone had arrived before speaking. She was dressed in jeans and a plain blouse, and true to her word of last week, wore dark sunglasses to hide her eyes of the ibad.

"The Adler Planetarium — America's First Planetarium — was founded in 1930 by Chicago business leader Max Adler," she began. "The museum is home to three full-size theaters, extensive space science exhibitions, and one of the world's most important antique astronomical instrument collections on display."

"The planetarium is built on what once was an artificial island on Lake Michigan. Northerly Island, as it is called, was the first of what was to be a series of artificial islands stretching south. The permanent land link was constructed soon after the planetarium was built. Each of the twelve corners of the landmark 1930s building is decorated by a bronze plaque, which represents a sign of the zodiac, and the dedication plaque located in the Adler's Rainbow Lobby depicts the gods and goddesses for which the planets are named. Pluto is missing because it was not discovered until February 18, 1930, after the plaque was created. Ironic, almost, given that Pluto is not currently considered a planet anymore, so the plaque is once again correct."

"We can tell them I'm an extraterrestrial," she said, thinking back to Fraser's class from earlier. "Here to examine their misguided attempts to map the universe and laugh at them."

"Then what if they decide they want to take you away to do tests on you?" Raven said. "You know I would never allow that, but it would cause a scene!"

"Then we'll have you teleport us away to safety..." Karla said--and then glanced over at Lady Ghanima. Who would be Quite Displeased with them in any of this actually happened. "Or you could do the humane thing and let me get carted away for tests rather than coming back to the island and whatever Lady Ghanima will have devised as a suitable punishment."

"That is hardly humane," Raven scolded. "You could be in grave danger, and I could lose control of myself when I tried to save you." Her tone was light, but it was always a fear in the back of her mind.

"Neither is leaving me to Lady Ghanima's wrath," Karla muttered, mostly to stop herself from reminding Raven that she would always be there to kiss her back down.

Somehow, she felt like that wasn't a productive comment.

"You would not face her alone," Raven promised, not thinking of kisses at all, really. "I would tell her that surely it was an understandable error. We are so very used to a different life in Fandom."

"I feel like she'd be less than understanding about that," Karla said with a laugh. "And decide that I need more of an incentive to practice self-restraint."

"I do not think she would ever do anything unfair," Raven said, "but this is all just hypothetical anyway, as I am certain you will not have any trouble befall you."

"Only because I have you watching out for me," Karla said, giving Raven a friendly nudge. "I'm confident you'll stop me before I do anything to draw Lady Ghanima's wrath onto my head."
