Food Appreciation [Week 2, Period 4, Mon. 9/6]

Today, class was in the Danger Shop, where John had told the computer to create the perfect day for a barbecue cookout - an outdoor picnic with wooden tables and benches and lots of green grass and blue skies. It was Labor Day and very culturally appropriate. Also, John could get behind things like potato salad, cole slaw, pulled pork, and BBQ ribs anytime. He welcomed the class with a friendly smile and started yammering so they could get to the eating part.

"Welcome back! You guys are in luck 'cause even though this is a holiday and you might be groaning that Fandom doesn't seem to celebrate all the holidays, at least our class is having a celebratory cookout. This is barbecue, a food common to summer and the south. What we have for you try here is a variety of ways people prepare and cook pork and beef over, uh, different types of fire. Really, do we care how they cook it? No, just that it tastes good. Now, I warn you, sometimes BBQ can be spicy, so I got a variety, though nothing that'll set your tongue on fire if you're concerned." As much fun as that would be, he didn't need to hear the whining. "Because of the burn, BBQ's usually served with cool stuff like cole slaw and potato salad, which we also have. Along with iced tea since you guys are too young for me to feel right giving you the beer and not making you pay through the nose for it. No point putting Tino out of a job." Fun as that could be.

"Anyhow, you guys need to learn something, right? So I want you to try at least two things and then see if you can't get one of them in someone else's hair." John grinned. "Not that I would ever encourage a food fight." Even if potato salad was the best projectile at a party.

As Jane listened, she couldn't help that maybe it was a good thing her mom had flaked and enrolled her at this school again. At least she had a semester of eating real food, without having to sniff anything that had been in the fridge for weeks to see if it was still decent.

Momoko had no idea what holiday it was, today, but it was totally an awesome one judging from the food set out. She was a bit antsy as she waited for the lecture to be over, and was totally eying the table with the desserts.

Kon grinned as he caught sight of Momo. He grinned and waved, hoping to catch her eye.

Momoko saw the movement from the corner of her eye and turned to look. "Eh? Kon?" She cheerfully moved to join him. "You're in this class, too? Awesome!"

Alex would be fine with eating but he didn't want to end up getting smashed with food so he was gonna use his plate as a shield.

And then he'd retaliate if someone did manage to hit him. Right now, the food was the priority.

Yeaaah, given the option to hide under a table, Chuck would take it... and take his quickly collected BBQ food with him. That way he could concentrate more on the eating and a little less on avoiding getting food squashed in his hair.

That would be K-Mart diving under the table with her own plate of food. She wasn't going to be throwing perfectly nommable food, thank you very much.

"Hey," she said by way of greeting.

Chuck, halfway through his piece of chicken was forced to wave with his wing in greeting as he finished his mouthful.

"Hey, uh... How's the war going out there?"

Calvin wasn't particularly worried about getting caught in a food fight, he was far more focused on eating the food than throwing it.

Now, that guy just looked way to comfortable. He was totally cheating by using his tactile telekinesis, but all was fair in love and war.

Purposely looking in the other direction, Kon casually used his telekinesis to flip the plate Calvin was holding toward his face.

Peter was trying to figure out if there would be an easily defended spot to launch a food attack from... while he nommed on some delicious barbecue.

Jane was happy to eat, though she was watching the other students through narrowed eyes, waiting to duck the first incoming flinging food.

And maybe she was putting potato salad on her spoon in order to see how well it catapulted.

Joolushko had a plate in front of her and a glass of iced tea she was sipping while watching her classmates warily. She didn't plan on leaving here with cole slaw in her hair.

Momoko could hold her own in a food-fight, but was totally not going to start one. This food was too delicious!

Kon, on the other hand, had no such reservations. Looking as innocent as possible, he scooped up some potato salad and flung it with his tactile telekinesis.

Helen was interested in trying the food - and not in getting food in her hair.

Kon glanced over at John, then away, then back again. Oh what the hell, you only live once.

He grabbed a handful of coleslaw and flung it at John, before turning away and trying to look innocent.
