Boom-De-Yada Science - Danger Shop, Wednesday, Period 1 [Week 1]

The Danger Shop was set up so that when the students walked in, they were on the viewing platform of a space station orbiting the Earth. The window stretched from floor to ceiling and from wall to wall and displayed the planet below them. Once everyone had gathered, the Boom-De-Yada song started playing. That was when the Doctor made his appearance from the back of the room bopping along with the singing. He waited until the song was finished before he addressed the class.

"Hello! I'm the Doctor. It's the strangest thing. This song, the boom-de-yada, it gets stuck in your head like a brain parasite. Don't worry! It's not. It's only like one. But as I was building something far too complicated to explain in one sentence, I started humming along and then singing and, well, look at her." He splayed an arm out directed at the Earth beneath them. "Millions of planets in the universe and everything always comes back here eventually. It's beautiful with the blobs and blue and green and swirls of white. Completely insignificant in the scheme of things, and yet somehow it always finds a way to be special.

Anyway, that turned into a class and you signed up so you're here. We'll learn about the parts of Earth that are in the song and some others if I feel like it, as well as the science of how everything works and how you can use that knowledge to your advantage.

You've all been here on Earth at least," he checked his bulky gold wristwatch, "three days, so you'll be able to answer this question. What's your favourite thing about Earth so far? Don't tell me! Talk to each other. Multiple others. If you want to talk to me, you can, but the point is to get to know each other because you'll have to work together this semester, probably in dangerous situations since the Earth, well, Earth is a bit dangerous when it wants to be.

Over there, blonde girl, looks like she wants to kill you with her stare. That's Cara. She's my TA. I'm looking for another to make sure she doesn't set anything on fire. Talk to me if you want the job and I'll consider you. That's all, go on!"

He pressed a button on the wall and the song started playing again.

"Then that's what I'll say," Clark decided. "How'd you get another TA gig? I'm thinking black magic." He was trying to tease.

Cara snickered at the idea of using magic to gain the position, and at the mental image of what Zedd would do if he heard she had. "Mord'Sith magic doesn't extend to assisting lunatic teachers," she said dryly. "I'm just lucky."

"Lucky's a word for it," Clark supposed, glad he wasn't the one with responsibilities beyond showing up and trying his best. "Though that doesn't say all of what you could do with your magic..."

She hadn't said she considered it 'good' luck. "Less than you might think," Cara admitted, though she wasn't going to go into specifics, especially not in public. "We're not wizards."

"Right, because that's a distinction we have in my world," Clark said, smiling in his own idiocy. "You know...maybe we should have that conversation we started a while back sometime in the near future."
wrongkindofsith: (Pretty sure you're insane)

Cara hadn't even scratched the surface of the distinctions that existed in her world. "Which one?" she asked, not at all distracted by the smile, she wasn't the world's biggest fan of conversations... unless they were the kind that involved very little talking.

"We don't have...magic users," Clark told her. "Well, not ones that aren't from elsewhere originally." And no one who would call what he did magic.

Cara still found the idea of no magic users whatsoever hard to wrap her head around, given all the things in this place that seemed to run on some kind of magic Clark's Third Law was a bitch. "If you want one, you can have Zedd. He eats his own weight in food every day and never stops talking, but he's quite a reliable wizard." And he'd be so pleased at how she'd just described him. Truly.

Clark grinned at her description. "You know, I think my mom would say the same about me? Minus the wizard part, of course."
wrongkindofsith: (I'm a viking!)

"I'm sure you're reliable at something," Cara said, because he was fun to tease.

"What, like farm work?" That went right back to that conversation they'd skipped.

"Depends on what you're wearing when you do it." Not that Cara overly objected to the male tendency to start stripping whenever they did any kind of physical labour. At least, not when the men were pretty.

Clark laughed, cheeks turning pink at the implication there. "Yeah, I think I'm pretty reliable with my usual flannels."

"And without them?" Cara asked, oh so very innocently.
