The Danger Shop was set up so that when the students walked in, they were on the viewing platform of a space station orbiting the Earth. The window stretched from floor to ceiling and from wall to wall and displayed the planet below them. Once everyone had gathered, the Boom-De-Yada song started playing. That was when the Doctor made his appearance from the back of the room bopping along with the singing. He waited until the song was finished before he addressed the class.

"Hello! I'm the Doctor. It's the strangest thing. This song, the boom-de-yada, it gets stuck in your head like a brain parasite. Don't worry! It's not. It's only like one. But as I was building something far too complicated to explain in one sentence, I started humming along and then singing and, well, look at her." He splayed an arm out directed at the Earth beneath them. "Millions of planets in the universe and everything always comes back here eventually. It's beautiful with the blobs and blue and green and swirls of white. Completely insignificant in the scheme of things, and yet somehow it always finds a way to be special.

Anyway, that turned into a class and you signed up so you're here. We'll learn about the parts of Earth that are in the song and some others if I feel like it, as well as the science of how everything works and how you can use that knowledge to your advantage.

You've all been here on Earth at least," he checked his bulky gold wristwatch, "three days, so you'll be able to answer this question. What's your favourite thing about Earth so far? Don't tell me! Talk to each other. Multiple others. If you want to talk to me, you can, but the point is to get to know each other because you'll have to work together this semester, probably in dangerous situations since the Earth, well, Earth is a bit dangerous when it wants to be.

Over there, blonde girl, looks like she wants to kill you with her stare. That's Cara. She's my TA. I'm looking for another to make sure she doesn't set anything on fire. Talk to me if you want the job and I'll consider you. That's all, go on!"

He pressed a button on the wall and the song started playing again.

She wanted the job!

Even if it wasn't a job.

"Are you still looking for a TA? I have traveled a fair deal of the Earth, and it is awesome and this class is too!" And she was probably bouncing there; even if she didn't get the spot, she was going to love the class.

"Are you a scientist? You said you liked magic. Magician or scientist?"

"Magician!" And proud to be one. "Would that be a problem?" Because that would suck big time.

"Only for the purposes of the TA job," the Doctor said. "I need someone who's more of a scientist to keep the TA balance. But I expect you to speak up in class, magician." He liked her enthusiasm and wasn't about to let that slip away.

"Ah, bummer." Still, the class was pretty interesting. "I will be hard to miss, then~!" There was a lot to share, after all.

"Good. Where are you from, magician?" He'd use her name eventually.

"The Earth, but mine is full of super-powered people, both good and evil. And you know, they fight and stuff." She liked being called magician. Food for her pride. "How about you, uh, sir?"

"Ahh, parallel universe. You, not me. I'm from Gallifrey in the constellation of Kasterborous. It's okay if you haven't heard of it. Not many from Earth have unless I tell them about it."

"Sounds like a pretty awesome place, really. Do you have magic there?" She might or might not be trying to persuade him anyway. Not that she didn't like the conversation.

"No magic," he replied. There was nothing there now, but when he spoke of Gallifrey, sometimes, when he felt like it, he spoke like it was always there, even now. "Only Time Lords and science which really could look like magic to a species not advanced enough to understand what they're looking at."

That made Zatanna think for a moment. "Maybe it wouldn't be too crazy to think of magic, or actual 'real' magic as somdthing science can't figure out yet. I can do a spell and make fire, but so does anyone with matches." What would her father say? "Well, in my world there are people that use science in ways that are almost magical already."

"I like the way you think," the Doctor decided. "Magic is science unexplained. The same principles apply to the way science and magic are used. But I'd imagine they play by different rules."

"Sticking to the fire example... I can do the whole combustion deal by, um, magically forving it to happen. A scientific would use something else for a mefium, something they can explain." She realized the way she did magic ws somewhat related to the idea.

Zatanna might look a bit smug at the moment.
