Library, Tuesday

Rinoa was still working on Roaring Hills. She was normally a much faster reader than this, but with all the excitement lately -- break week! Squall's birthday! new students! heading home, then back again in as many days! -- she hadn't had time to herself. Not great big pockets of time, where you could pull out a book and fall into it. More stolen moments here and there, which were fine for frivolous books or short stories, but Gothic epics, you'd just settle into them once you were pulled out again.

Today, Rinoa was going to curl up at the aide's desk and read. Unless anyone needed her, naturally. Other book-lovers were free to interrupt her at will.

The bulk of Alexander's classes were on Mondays, with the exception of all the fodder his mother had made him take, and so he had a few extra hours on Tuesdays before the meeting for the Reserves met. Of course he was planning to spend them in the library, trying to seek out what he could about the Land of the Green Isles, although he was quickly depleting his options.

A bit of socialization before hitting the books, however, was always welcome and so he gave the little librarian girl a smile. "Hello, Rinoa. How is the book?"

Hat tucked under one arm, and the other full of medical and technical journals he'd acquired the other day, William made his way into the library. There was a moment of puzzlement as he took in the unfamiliar face at the desk, before realising that of course more than one person must work in the library.

"Morning, Miss," he greeted her with a nod.

Henry was taking care of some end of the month paperwork during most of his shift, though he did pop his head out now and again to make sure Sherlock wasn't terrorizing his staff.

... not that Rinoa seemed easy to terrorize, but anyhow.

The brief assessment of the plot made Alexander chuckle a little. "Yes," he said, "I hear that love sometimes can make people make a mess out of things quite often."

Being in love, in fact, made such a mess of him back home that he wouldn't have even been here if it weren't for.

"In which ways have they been wrecking things? I apologize for the question, and will let you return to your reading, if you would like, but the book is unfamiliar to me and I am now curious as to whether or not it might be worth pursuing."

If it was about people in love, though, he had a feeling he would want to read it and with gusto.

"I am new, yes," William replied, a little startled by the enthusiasm. "William Murdoch," he introduced himself, setting down the pile of journals. "I've come to return these- and to seek out more."

To be fair, asking Will to discuss something like photoluminescence or ballistics or code-breaking was likely to get his enthusiasm levels approaching critical velocity. "Technical manuals," he informed Rinoa. "I've a century and a quarter's worth of innovation to get up to speed with."

By the time Rinoa had finished her synopsis, Alexander was frowning gravely. "That is a rather terrible turn of events," he agreed. "If I were Alfred," and he certainly hoped he'd never have to be; it would be so upsetting if Cassima wound up only marrying him because he was a prince!, "I would certainly give Byron a piece of my mind for incurring such a thing upon my sister. Then again, if it were my sister, I'm sure Rosella would give him quite an earful herself."

An image that, no doubt, turn his frown upside down.

"It's a little overwhelming, but thankfully people here seem to be quite pleased to answer my questions," William admitted. Ànd an inventor? I don't know if I could call myself that, precisely. I make things, now and then, but mostly I just try to keep abreast of what others far more capable than myself are managing to come up with."

"Exactly," said Alexander with a firm, passionate nod. "If anything, I daresay the blame should be placed on Emily, for not following her heart. It is true that it is not easy to do so, but love should be able to conquer all adversity! I would give up the world to be it the one I truly love..."

Clearly, this was a subject that Alexander cared quite a bit about. Perhaps a bit too much. But, after all, wasn't true love the whole reason he was even in this library to begin with?

"Hey", said Zatanna as she entered, voice dropping accordingly to the fact that libraries would explode if you talked to high. Or something.

"I'm in need of history books." Direct to the point, oh yeah.

"That's rather a nice thought," William had to admit, "but probably more likely to happen to those with the means to do more than just dabble."

"I know how she feels," Alexander found himself admitting quietly, and then a blush filled his face. He couldn't believe he was getting so worked up over a fictional story that he was only hearing about second hand! He cleared his throat. "And you're right. She should have. Especially if faith is...all you have."

She had to stop for a moment before collecting her thoughts. Was she on Earth? She was pretty sure reading somewhere she was on Maryland, which was good.

"Let's go with this world for now, and work out way from there." Better be safe than sorry.
