Food Appreciation [Week 1, Period 4, Mon. 8/30]

The awesome thing about Fandom was the access to all things edible. When students arrived in the completely normal classroom, they'd see a whole pile of individually bagged snack items along with a variety of canned soft drinks. There was also a teacher at the front, leaning lazily against a table and faking a big smile.

"Welcome to Food Appreciation! I'm John Sheppard, your, uh, team leader on this...well, we're gonna go with mission." If he seemed a little awkward standing at the front of an actual classroom with long tables and chairs, that was because he was. John already missed the beach.

"But seriously, you guys can call me John. Or just Sheppard. The mister part freaks me out and you don't need to be responsible for any age-related mental breaks coming. In case you care, I graduated Fandom in 2009 and since my universe moves in fast forward by comparison, now i'm a little older, a little wiser, and a lot more knowledgeable than any other version of me you may have seen or heard about. And, uh, if you heard about gremlin bites? All lies. Horrible, horrible lies." Though there were still many sources on the island with video footage of such things. Not that John was sharing. "Now, Fandom taught me how to dance, not get blown up, pick a lock, and that I'm a walking gray area ethically speaking. But I'm not teaching any of that stuff this year. Instead, you guys get to learn about food!"

John gestured to the little snack bags before them. "Okay, this is kind of like an introduction to me and my favorite snack food. I love Cheetos. There's something about the fake cheese and the way it sticks to your fingers and the coloring dyes your tongue and how those in the know can tell if you've been snacking from the orange streaks on your jeans. Uh, not that I ever forget napkins. Anyway, what I want you guys to do is give the Cheetos a try while you talk amongst yourselves and see if we can't get some introductions going for the new among you! I'm interested in knowing what foods you'd be interested to try or absolutely hate. Let's hear it."

Jane was listening. She was. She was just trying to listen over the rustling of her trying to get the damn bag open. It seemed to be one of those sadistically resilient bags that refused to come apart when you tore it, and even though you knew it would probably end with Cheetos strewn about the room all willy nilly, she kept trying.

You couldn't get her to put this kind of time and effort into anything else resembling school, but for something noxious and orange with no nutritional value whatsoever, hell yes she'd work for it. Unless she got bored first.

Alex wasn't that big a fan of Cheetos. He more liked Doritos because there were different flavors and his fingers didn't look like he'd tried to fake and bake and failed.

Still, he'd opened a bag because the food was free.

Ohmygosh, Cheetos, yes please! Ariel was so totally stealing some.

And by stealing some, she meant having a few.

OR DID SHE?

Momoko had no idea how she had managed to score such a wonderful class on a Monday. She also had no idea how Mister Sheppard was going to manage to get people here to properly appreciate food.

Especially when he was starting with Cheetos.

Joolushko was certain that food should not be that particular shade of orange. That wasn't going to stop her from eating a bag of these things. It was just going to make her stare at them for a while first.
