Library [08/29]

Jonothon had been in desperate need of the familiar today, and waking up this morning to realize that the person who was sleeping in Jak's bed was most definitely not Jak had been jolt enough to spur him into actually getting to his feet of his own accord, pulling on his cleanest dirty clothing, and making his way down to the library today for his shift.

That he was now moving through the stacks like a man possessed, looking over the course calendar for the semester and setting out displays of books that he thought other students might find topical to each and every class... That was something else. Now that he'd immersed himself in the familiar, he was hell-bent on not letting himself think too hard about why he'd needed it so badly.

The library was open, and was possibly almost too ready to face students new and old.

[The library, it is open.]

At cockcrow, Faramir had been up and about. He'd gone past the stables first, making certain that Baru was well taken care of. He'd walked around the school grounds for a while, taking in everything that there was to see.

When it seemed that finally, the place was starting to stir, he'd headed for the school. Finding the library had not been easy and he must have passed it several times before someone took pity on him and sent him in the right direction.

This was surely the place he had been looking for, there was no doubt in Faramir's mind and he stopped a little inside the door the stare around. The sight thrilled him, even as the books around him were all in the same script. Still, there were many books and there had to be something to help him.

It took an instant before Faramir realised someone was watching him... or thought he was standing in the way. He'd been too caught up in taking in the rows and rows of books, all of which he'd not be able to read.

"My apologies," he said quickly, wondering if perhaps he'd broken some sort of rule. He drew to his full height before giving Jono a small bow. "I am Faramir, son of Denethor. I arrived to the island yesterday and was told that I might find aide here. If you would be so kind as to tell me to whom I could turn with my questions, it would be much appreciated."

The reaction came all too soon and Faramir jerked his head upright, light eyes studying Jono for a moment, taking in the bandages.

"You did not use your voice to speak to me," he concluded. No one had warned him for this.

There was sympathy in Faramir's eyes as he added the answers and the bandages together. Perhaps it wouldn't be wanted by Jonothon, but Faramir was incapable of not giving it.

He inclined his head in acceptance of the answer. "There is none. I meant no disrespect and hope you can forgive me if my remark caused offence. I fear that I spoke out of ignorance of this world, something I hope soon to right."

"I have been told that most people here are not," Faramir remarked, letting the subject drift away to something that might not offend his companion. "Is your world much different from this one?"

"I fear that you may be right," Faramir admitted with a crooked smile.

He reached out towards one of the books, letting his fingers brush the strange letters. "I find myself incapable of deciphering this script. I was hoping that perhaps you would books to aide me."

"I'm from Gondor," he replied. "It's the year 2999 of the Third Age. The script I know is called Tengwar, there are some variations, but either should at least be more clear to me. Do you have books in the Elven tongue?" he asked. "Sindarin or High-elven even, though my knowledge of it is less profound."

It wasn't until later in the afternoon, after his still to be played out trip into the city with Jason, that Dolf found himself wandering the halls of the school buildings themselves. He had new clothes on now, fresh clothes, and they didn't move as well as his old, battered, lived-in ones. He spent a lot of time tugging on his shirt, trying to get it to sit right, though right never really happened.

He knew that if he wanted to get anywhere here, he'd have to brush up on his English. This wouldn't have been nearly as hard six months ago, with American TV still fresh in his mind - now, he was having such trouble even keeping his mind in the right frame to recognise anything as English at all.

So the library, it was. He needed a dictionary, or ideally a phrasebook, anything that would help. There were a lot of books, though, and so Dolf froze a little upon entry, eyes running from one bookcase to another. Where to start?

"I have not," Faramir said, following after Jono. His eyes kept scanning the books around them, hoping that a familiar script would draw his attention.

It was somewhat disappointing, finding that even the Elvish tongue was unknown here. They had left such a mark on Gondor and it was a daunting thought that the Eldar had not been here.

Dolf startled at the noise, but only for a second; strangely enough, it was the medieval part of his mind - the one that had blossomed tentatively into being over the past few months - that kept him from startling too severely. The voice of God, the children would have said, in awe, and the rational end of Dolf's brain immediately interjected: no, of course not, it's just some trick.

They met in the middle.

Dolf took a deep breath. "Yes," he said. "Lost."

Dolf's eyes darted past Jono, looking for anything: a speaking aid, or loudspeakers, or something like it. He thought about addressing it - you seem to be speaking out of thin air, that's not possible, but he kept getting stuck on possible - mogelijk? Some form of it? Möglich -- no, that was German.

So he'd have to try and ignore the mystery, for now, and answer the question instead. "I need an book," he started. "English?"
